Prospect Spotlight: Brayden Messamaker (2021)
Good things are on the horizon for the Albia Blue Demons, and it’s a 6-foot-2 sharpshooting guard that will help lead the way.
Brayden Messamaker was the team’s second leading scorer last season as a sophomore, and was sensational this past weekend at the Grand View Team Camp.
The rising junior guard is working this offseason of perfecting his jumper and becoming a bigger and better athlete.
“I think my best attribute is shooting, I’ve spent a lot of time in the gym just getting shots up. I think I’m a pretty good passer, I can find open guys and get my teammates involved,” said Messamaker.
“This offseason, I’ve been working on being more athletic and getting to the rim. And it’s helped me with my shooting, because if I can blow past guys then they have to take a step back and I can get my shot of easier.”
As a sophomore, Messamker averaged 10 points and made a team-best 57 3s for the 13-8 Blue Demons.
“I thought it was a pretty good season last year,” he said. “And we’re all working hard right now and I think we’ll be pretty good next year.”
In addition to playing in high school team camps with Albia, Messamaker has been playing club ball with Iowa Intensity 16u. He’s also been participating in some weight-training programs to help him get stronger and quicker.
Expect Messamaker to come into his junior season bigger, stronger and more skilled than last season.
“I want to try and be able to score from anywhere on the floor and become a better passer,” he said. “Also, be able to go out there and guard the other team’s best player. I want to have the speed and be athletic enough to guard the other team’s best player; I’m getting there, but I’m not quite there yet.”
