Chance has versatility on both ends of the floor. On offense, he can score at all three levels while on defense he has positional versatility to guard multiple spots. Garner told me, “I’m a really athletic scorer and defender. I am a wing player that can drive and shoot and finish through contact. I’m an all around offensive player and will lock down the other teams star player on defense.” Garner told me that his strength on the court is “being able to get past people with one dribble move and exploding to the rim or hitting a jump shot off the dribble. I’m good at getting defenders off balance.”
Perhaps the biggest thing keeping Chance from being a big time contributor as a Sophomore is his defensive effort. Garner acknowledges that defense is an area for growth for him, “I am still working on playing defense as much as I want to play offense. Also, when I drive and cause the defender to collapse I need to kick the ball out.” But Chance was pleased with his first season of high school basketball. He said he had a great season, “I went through a lot of ups and downs and growing. I averaged about 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists per game on the freshman team. As a team we only lost 2 games on the season and were recognized as a top Freshman team around the state.”
After such a good high school season, Chance is also enjoying a good 15u AAU season. Playing with Kentucky Future Elite, Garner said he is having a great AAU season. “I’m averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game and have won 4 tournaments including an Adidas Silver Gauntlet Qualifier. In July we are going to play at AAU nationals.” After the AAU season ends, Chance is going to shift his focus to his Sophomore year with the Bears. He told me, “My goals are to produce on varsity next year and win games. I want to be the best version of myself I can be.” If Garner can take the next step, Butler can be a formidable force in the 6th region and look to make a run to Rupp Arena in March.
