Prospect Spotlight: Luke Turner Rancho Christian 2021
The Rancho Christian Eagles might have been well known the past couple of season for their elite talent in Isaiah and Evan Mobley, and Dominick Harris, but one player who has been and will continue to be key to their success is Luke Turner.
The junior sharpshooter has steadily continued to make a name for himself in the Southern California area. He can switch between both shooting guard and small forward and his shooting prowess has already caught the attention of several Division 1 schools.
“I’ve heard from USC, Portland, and Washington State. That’s about it,” Turner told Prep Hoops. “I mostly just want to stay on the West Coast. I want to play for a school that has me as a priority as a freshman and will get me the ball in my spots.”
Playing in the lineup with the aforementioned Mobley brothers, and talented guards in Harris and Jordan Montgomery, Turner had to pick and choose his spots on the court. He was able to move well without the ball and get in position to be an effective offensive weapon.
He had some big performances for Rancho Christian at times last season too. In a highly anticipated matchup back in February with Sierra Canyon, Turner scored 15 points, including a few clutch three-pointers in a Rancho Christian win.
“My role was basically just pretty much a shooter and a lot of offensive rebounding,” Turner said. “To be another big on the floor and create mismatches and spread out the floor for Evan and Isaiah and all of them.”
This summer, Turner is playing with the famed Compton Magic on the AAU circuit. It’s going to be a similar situation for him as playing at Rancho Christian. The team has a lot of talented scorers on the roster, and picking and choosing his spots is what he’s definitely capable of doing.
He’s playing with Evan Mobley, as well as players such as Dalen Terry, Yassine Gharram, Andre Harris, Chibuzo Agbo, and Jaylen Clark. Each brings a different skill set to the team, but Turner is still the featured sharpshooter.
“I started out in the 16s and then they moved me up to the 17s,” Turner said. “I’m not really going to be the main guy but I’m just trying to play my role and do a little bit more too like spread the floor for them and be the shooter for them. Also, try to get to the basket and rebound some.”
Although he is known primarily as a three-point gunner, there’s a little bit more to Turner’s game. Last month at Compton Magic’s Memorial Day weekend event, he threw down a huge dunk in transition.
And as the summer goes on, there are a few aspects to his game he’s looking to work on, some things that he’s ready to showcase to the world.
“Yeah, my post game and my athleticism, I’ve been working on my athleticism a lot, it’s gotten a lot better,” Turner said. “And then just off the dribble, I’m a lot better with that, I just haven’t shown it off that much.”
