The 123 players were broken up into different teams in either the “ACC” or “Pac-12” conference. Not all players were attendance Friday night but I would say about 90% were. As I walked around Cerritos College gymnasium, these are some players who caught my attention on Friday night.
Daishen Nix (Trinity- Las Vegas, NV) In my opinion, he was the most outstanding player on Friday night. Nix did whatever he wanted on the court. He made all the right plays, whether it was on offense and defense. Nix is an exceptional passer. He plays the game as if he is two plays ahead. But please do not be fooled, Nix can also score the ball when he wants. I can tell he has worked on his jump shot and made defense pay for going under the screens. When attacking the rim, Nix has an excellent layup package and can finish with either hand. Nix makes the game look really easy.
Scottie Barnes (University School- Davie, FL) When Barnes stepped onto the court yesterday he was there to prove a point. He was there to win but also to prove a point of why he should be the top 2020 guy. Barnes shows extraordinary athleticism, but on Friday he put his passing ability on display. He was able to put his teammates in positions to succeed. For a camp game, he showed great leadership on the defensive end. He always made sure his teammates got back. When he was not showing off his vision, Barnes was able to get to the cup whenever he wanted to.
Paolo Banchero (O’Dea- Seattle, WA) Banchero is one player that has got a lot of buzz on the EYBL circuit. On Friday night Paolo was able to finish around the rim at a high level. He displayed great footwork and showed the ability to finish with either hand. Once Paolo catches the ball free throw and below it is bad news for the defense.
Zion Harmon (Marshall County- Benton KY) Zion is one of the better passers in the camp and he showed why on Friday night. I like that Zion can pass with either hand. Zion was always making the look ahead pass on the semi-fast break. Zion also showed the ability to score the ball from the midrange whether it was a pull-up jumper or floater.
Terren Frank (Sierra Canyon- Chatsworth, CA) Terren who is the son of a former NBA player Tellis Frank, really put his jumper on display Friday night. I like how Frank’s game has been developing since his freshman year. Frank was showcasing his three point jumper but also his face-up game from inside the arc. One thing that he does not get enough credit for is his rebounding.
Deivon Smith (Grayson- Loganville GA) If you want to talk about speed, Smith is one who uses his speed on the basketball court. I liked that even after a made basket Smith would turn the turbo on and push the ball up the court. Smith showed great ability to get to the rim, but also find the open man. Smith also showed great instincts on the defensive side.
Ian Martinez (JSerra- San Juan Capistrano) Ian’s best skill is probably his court vision. But on Friday night, his three-point jumper was his best skill. He hit all different types of 3’s. He even hit one beautiful step back that would have Rick Isaacs screaming, “He’s a pro!” Ian recently committed to Utah, so he will be a fun one to track to see if he can take his game to a pro level.
Lance Ware (Big Picture Learning Academy- Camden, NJ) Ware is a 6’9 big man who is trying to put someone on a poster anytime he is around the rim. He is just a powerful finisher with either hand. He also displayed great passing ability, connecting with teammates multiple times with the high low. He showed great ability to run the floor on the fast break.
