Mercedes (above), a 5-foot-11 2020 guard, has made the move from Miami Palmetto in Miami-Dade County to Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson in Broward. Tuesday, he helped power Boyd Anderson to impressive victories over Park Vista (47-38) and Pahokee (85-28).
Allen, a highly-touted 2023 guard prospect, was playing with Wellington after a big season as an eighth-grader at Benjamin School. The 6-3 playmaker came off the bench in Wellington’s victories over Seminole Ridge (63-44) and Village Academy (54-50).
Mercedes and Palmetto won 20 games in 2018-19. The move allows him to continue playing alongside travel basketball teammate Rivaldo Fairweather. Mercedes and Fairweather both play with South Florida Elite.
“I feel like making the decision on going to Boyd Anderson was really going to take my game to the next level,” Mercedes said. “Having a teammate in my travel team that I’ve already played with and knowing he’s at Boyd [Anderson] sparked much more interest. I’m just ready to put in the work to not only make myself better but my new teammates as well. I’m prepared to have a great senior year and I’m very content with my decision.”
Allen displays the poise and attitude of an upperclassman at a young age. He helped lead Benjamin to a 13-11 season in 2018-19. Allen scored 30 points against Palm Beach Lakes and dropped in 26 against Miami Schoolhouse Prep. Three of the Bucs’ 11 losses were to three-time defending Class 4A state champion Westminster Academy. Allen and Benjamin eventually would be ousted by Sagemont, 69-66, in the 4A regional semifinals.
“He’s a stellar kid,” Wellington coach Matthew Colin said of Allen. “He works really hard. He is very coachable. … The sky is the limit for that kid.”
Allen plays travel basketball with Team Breakdown on the Under Armour Association circuit.
