In just his third week on the job, Del Sol Academy coach Stuart Humes got to know his players, with hopes of instilling more discipline. Spring Valley coach Paul Blair said he wanted to see his players compete, while evaluating their time on the floor. But with “dead legs” after many games in recent weeks, the results he looked for didn’t come from a scoreboard. Just days removed from a highly-competitive Jaguar Summer Slam tournament, Desert Pines coach Mike Uzan went deep into his bench early, to evaluate his reserves.
Regardless of what their coaches sought, these players delivered with grit, fire and high basketball IQ:
Noah Sherrard, Silverado HS, 2021Noah Sherrard, 5-foot-11 SG, Silverado 2021
Sherrard showed off his range from three and was fearless attacking the rim. He proved he can stop and pop, or finish over the trees down low. He knows how to find the open man, and uses his handles and great control to get through defenders.
Jason Sims, Faith Lutheran, 2020
Jason Sims, 6-foot-2 G, Faith Lutheran 2020
Sims is a slasher who can dribble through traffic with ease. He’s a strong shooter, who can also drive, draw contact and finish off-balance.
Nati Asfow, Del Sol Academy, 2020
Nati Asfow, 6-foot-5 PF, Del Sol Academy 2020
Coach Humes quickly recognized Asfow “can do it all in the post” and “does whatever we need him to” with good moves down low, and the length to reach boards others can’t. At 220 pounds, he also showed off his shooting and strong outlet passing.
Azavier Johnson, Faith Lutheran, 2021
Azavier Johnson 6-foot-4 G, Faith Lutheran 2021
Johnson knows how to pick his spots, with the ability to attack the rim and shoot the three. He showed good court vision and will use his strength and varsity experience to lead the Crusaders this year.
Amari James, 6-foot-3 G, Spring Valley 2020
James knows how to draw contact, showed good control in traffic and proved to be a confident shooter. Coach Blair lauded James as a leader who controls the tempo, always guards opponents’ best players and has high character on and off the court.
Ta’Quawn Dillon Hodges, 6-foot-1 G, Rancho 2021
Hodges showed patience to make the right plays and showed off his good hands, snatching rebounds and steals. The hard-nosed penetrator can also hit shots from deep. With no seniors on the squad, Hodges will be called upon as a leader this year.
Other players who impressed include Milos Uzan, 6-foot-3 G, Desert Pines 2022, Chris Dockery 6-foot-5 G, Centennial 2021, and Emmanuel “Mooch” Austin 6-foot-2 G, Legacy 2021.
