Separated into two brackets, the first day featured matchups that included Brentwood, Long Beach Poly, Lynwood, Loyola, Alemany, Santa Monica, Maranantha, and the host team Fairfax High School. There were several players who stood out among the participants on the first day.
Keith Dinwiddie, Fairfax – 26 points, 6 3PTs, 3 steals
Dinwiddie, a known sharpshooter coming off of Pangos All-American Camp and NBPA Camp invites, continued his archery from beyond the arc. The Lions product displayed his IQ and court awareness by playing off the ball and reading and reacting to Maranantha’s defense en route to six made 3’s. Whether it was a zone or man defense, it didn’t matter as Dinwiddie found high quality looks all night which resulted in a 80-71 win for Fairfax.
Peyton Watson, Long Beach Poly – 36 points, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks
Watson continued to show why he’s climbing up the ranks as a must know player for the class of 2021. The Long Beach Poly Jackrabbit had his scoring ability on full emphasis with dunks, drives to the basket, and NBA range three pointers off the dribble. In addition to his 36 points, Watson cleaned the glass with 10 rebounds, and also swatted away 5 shots en route to a very impressive performance.
Brandon Whitney, Alemany – 39 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals
In a close game that was closed out in overtime, Brandon Whitney truly put his team on his back. After starting the game down 10, the Alemany product went on a tear and finished with 39 of his team’s 64 points. Whitney spotlighted his ability to penetrate into the lane all night long as Santa Monica had no answer for his off the dribble game. Not only did he score at will, Whitney also helped his team’s cause as he pulled down 10 boards. Coach Meeks and Alemany are in good hands with Whitney at the helm.
Christian Moore, Brentwood – 25 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals
Also, coming off a Pangos All- American Camp invite was Christian Moore. The Brentwood power guard continued his blazing summer with his performance against Long Beach Poly. Moore showcased his downhill ability as he on several possessions, rebounded the ball and attacked the rim with strength finished with body control, and also on alternating possessions created for teammates with better looks. It’s hard to believe that Moore is a class of 2022 product as he plays with the maturity and IQ of a much wiser player.
Jaren Johnson, Lynwood – 17 points, 4 assists, 4 steals
Christian Johnson, Lynwood – 14 points, 9 assists, 7 steals
From sharing the ball, playing the passing lanes, or scoring when needed, both Jaren and Christian Johnson asserted themselves and stood out for Lynwood. To ice the game, Christian Johnson had a steal that led to the game winning basket. Jaren Johnson led Lynwood with 17 points, as the Lynwood Knights defeated the Loyola Cubs 70-68.
