SPRINGFIELD — Missouri State University hosted its annual high school boys’ basketball team camp featuring four AAU teams (Yanders Law, Carroll, Marcus Denmon Elite and MBA) as well as Blue Valley Northwesst (Kan.), Confluence Prep and area teams Aurora, Glendale, Kickapoo, Lebanon, Parkview and Rogersville.
Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several Kansas prospects who stood out at the event.
Jack Chapman, 6’5, G, 2021, Blue Valley Northwest
Chapman has a terrific combination of size and skill for a guard and continues to showcase an all-around game. He is terrific in transition where he is strong going to the basket and drawing fouls or finishing, and in the halfcourt he is able to play on the baseline where he can elevate over smaller defenders and score easy chances. Chapman shows a smooth outside shooting stroke and can knock down 3-pointers, or put the ball on the floor and attack the basket. He has a good feel for passing the ball and can get on the defensive glass where he is a threat to take the ball coast-to-coast.
4-Gavyn Elkamil, 6’4, 2021, Pittsburg, Carroll GoL1ve 17U
A talented guard who plays both ends of the floor to great success. Elkamil brings a good combination of speed and strength to the floor which translates to fast break looks, extra passes and physical play and deep 3-pointers. He’s also very good at mixing it up with post players and coming away with boards.
3-Javon Grant 5’11, 2021, Pittsburg, Carroll GoL1ve 17U
A defensive-minded guard who can hold his own against opposing team’s top playmaker. He likes to play close and keeps his hands up and in their face. He’s also a great ball handler and has a confidence in his offensive game as a shooter anywhere on the floor.
Markell Hood, 6’5, G/F, 2020, Blue Valley Northwest
One of Kansas; best two-way players, Hood is a strong wing player who excels at the defensive end of the floor and has the ability to do a little bit of everything at the offensive end. He can handle the ball, get to the basket and is a good passer, able to find the open man. Defensively, he can guard a varsity of positions, whether it’s a big man, an athletic wing player or a guard as he combines good, quick feet and a strong, physical frame.
Alston Mason, 6’0, G, 2021, Blue Valley Northwest
Previously at Olathe South, Mason showed why he is in the mix as the best young guard in Kansas — he can handle it as well as anyone, is creative off the bounce and has a good combination of moves and the quickness and athleticism to blow by defenders. He can shoot from the outside both off the catch and the dribble and is a willing passer who can run an offense, or score. He filled it up on Thursday against both Kickapoo and Lebanon scoring more than 20 points against both teams.
