Team Camp – Top Five
Taison Chatman of Totino Grace. So who will be the top freshman in the state next year? I have a candidate, Taison Chatman of Totino-Grace. This young but ultra talented scorer put 70 points on the board in three games scoring in high percentages against Minnetonka, Minneapolis North, and North St. Paul. That’s an average 23.3 points a game against varsity competition with the eyes of Gopher coaches watching close. Taison has been fabulous for the DTA 14s this spring and that excellent play continued.
Andre Gray of Hopkins. Hopkins put the hammer on Park Center at team camp and it was Andre Gray that was throwing down the hammer finishes time and time again in the win. Gray looks to be about a strong, 6-foot-3 guard that could possibly step forward and be the second scorer behind Kerwin Walton. Andre was a monster in the passing lanes last weekend and took several ball reversals, transition passes to the front of the rim for points.
Nathan Heise of Lake City. Heise nearly led Lake City over DeLaSalle with the dazzling performance that led to Gopher players jumping up and down on the sidelines screaming about his future! Nate is a big guard with a killer instinct that controls the pace and is fearless in the face of top competition. Send a couple guys at him? Top big schools in Minnesota tried but the UNI commit made short work of them throughout the day.
Jacob Hutson of Edina. Hutson’s low post ability is old school and teams that use a traditional low post will love him. He does not allow other bigs to get good position so there is rarely an opposing entry pass but his own position on the block is nearly unstoppable. This weekend we saw him jar players with contact creating space for makes with either hand and the reverse lay-up finish after a baseline spin was done before the defense could react. We continue to believe that Hutson is a several offer D1 prospect for those systems he will fit.
Gabe Madsen of Rochester Mayo. The opponents for the day? Kerwin Walton and Hopkins, J’Vonne Hadley and CDH, Camden Heide and Wayzata. The Spartans don’t quite have the established depth to play all the way through with these teams yet but Gabe and Mason Madsen always give them a chance. And this weekend Madsen went at Walton, Hadley, and Heide (and others of course) and had great success with a vicious basketball attack to complete. Madsen went for 20 plus in every game and received a scholarship offer from the Gophers.
Five More
Amari Carter of CDH. When this guy is locked in an engaged he has tremendous potential. Really a nice looking shot that was made consistently. A senior next fall.
Cade Haskins of DeLaSalle. The Islanders were in a tap to buzzer duel with Lake City but it was Haskins that made two huge shots including the game winner to get De the victory. Haskins went on to make shots the rest of the day as well. A DeLaSalle junior next fall.
Rob Jeter Jr of East Ridge. The Raptors have to replace a lot of bodies from last year. You know that Kendall Blue (2022), Zac Thomas (2021), and Drew Adams (2021) will fill in. Jeter also looks like he can handle the role based on his late game three and game clinching foul shots in one of the PC wins.
Curtis Jones of CDH. Love his demeanor. Love the way he has progressed as a secondary ball handler for CDH. Jones is one of the best shooters in the state but his ability to make the right choices with the ball is also standing out. A senior next fall.
Cooper Olson of Champlin Park. Cooper continues to score at the rim in many ways and most of it is because opposing bigs don’t have the size/agility combo to deal with his 6-foot-7 physical ability. A top 20-25 level senior.
