Teams from several regions made their way to Lexington for some good games and high level competition. Here’s a look at my most impressive 2022 and younger prospects. They are presented in no particular order and I wasn’t able to see every team in the event so the list is incomplete.
2022 Jordan Akal Jordan Akal 6'1" | PG Harlan | 2022 State KY , Harlan – The best pure scorer in the event, Akal had games of 35 and 45 points on Saturday. Jordan is shifty and has a high IQ but has been most helped by a growth spurt of about 3 inches since the first time I saw him last August. Don’t be surprised to see Akal among the top scorers in the state next season.
2023 Samuel Parrish, Tates Creek – Sam is only going to be a freshman this season but there’s no reason he shouldn’t be a starter at Tates Creek this year. On a team full of smaller guards, Parrish shined. He’s skilled and can shoot it and a good athlete who actually hammered a dunk on Sunday despite only being about 5’9.
2022 Jack Gohmann Jack Gohmann 6'3" | SG Lexington Catholic | 2022 State KY , Lexington Catholic – Gohmann was electric in their win over Fern Creek, pouring in 25 points. If he can be a consistent second scorer to go with Ben Johnson Ben Johnson 6'3" | CG Lexington Catholic | 2021 State KY , Catholic is a legitimate threat to win the 11th this year and next.
2023 Jacob Meyer Jacob Meyer 6'2" | PG Holy Cross Covington | 2023 #170 Nation GA , Scott – Another rising Freshman, Meyer was dynamic on Saturday afternoon against North Oldham and out-shined fellow 2023 Dallas Roberts Dallas Roberts 6'1" | PG North Oldham | 2023 State KY in their matchup. Meyer is skilled and athletic and plays with no fear.
2022 Kanye Henderson Kanye Henderson 6'3" | SG Henry Clay | 2022 State KY , Henry Clay – Henderson is still skinny and growing but he has a high skill level and knows how to play. Look for him to be the next Henry Clay star after Ques Warrick graduates.
2022 Colby Fugate Colby Fugate 6'3" | SF Paintsville | 2022 State KY , Paintsville – Great size for the position on the wing and a high skill level with a quick release on his shot. He needs to do more to affect the game other than score but there’s a reason he’s ranked so highly in our 2022 rankings.
2022 Bryce Riley Bryce Riley 6'5" | SF Bardstown | 2022 State KY , Nelson County – Riley can really shoot it but he’s got to improve as a slasher. He’s very strong for a kid who just turned 15 years old and has a bright future as long as he continues to develop his game.
2022 Robby Todd Robby Todd 6'7" | PF Madison Central | 2022 State KY , Dunbar – Over the course of the weekend, Todd was the best big at Dunbar and it wasn’t really close. For a kid I’d never heard of before the weekend, he left a lasting impression because of how hard he plays.
2022 Jerone Morton Jerone Morton 6'3" | SG George Rogers Clark | 2023 State KY , George Rogers Clark – Morton just keeps getting better as his game evolves. He is still working to add strength but he is a smart and highly skilled player that has the makings of being one of the best players in the 10th region this year.
2024 Trent Noah Trent Noah 6'7" | SF Harlan County | 2024 State #139 Nation KY , Harlan County – Only an 8th grader this year, Noah started as the point guard for the Black Bears. He has good size at about 6’4 and a noticeable skill level with the ability to score the ball. One to track for the next several years.
