Teams from several regions made their way to Lexington for some good games and high level competition. Here’s a look at my most impressive 2021 and younger prospects. They are presented in no particular order and I wasn’t able to see every team in the event so the list is incomplete.
2021 Trey James, Martin County – Trey had a fine weekend but there is cause for concern with his lack of overall foot speed and quickness. His post moves continue to improve and he’s the best big in Kentucky in the 2021 class but he has to get quicker.
2021 Ben Johnson, Lexington Catholic – Ben may have had the best weekend of any 2021 in the event before rolling his ankle against George Rogers Clark. Everyone knows he can shoot but he made some nice moves to attack the rim, especially in the win over Fern Creek.
2021 Jaden Rogers, Fern Creek – I was hoping for Rogers and Johnson to go head to head Saturday but it didn’t happen. Jaden has improved his strength and is super skilled. There’s a reason Miami has already offered him a scholarship.
2021 Zek Montgomery, Fern Creek – Montgomery has really improved since the last time I watched him. His shot mechanics are better and he hit perimeter shots. Zek is very long and very athletic. He has a chance to be a big time difference maker in the 6th region.
2021 Marcus Grant, Greenwood – Grant is strictly a shooter but he did shoot the ball really well in stretches this weekend. He’s a strong kid who will need to start attacking the rim more. He should help the Gators after moving in from Alabama this month.
2021 Dez Lindsay, Male – Lindsay doesn’t get all the press that his Male teammates get but he could be as good of a college prospect as anyone on the team. At 6’5 and still growing with a good frame and a lot of bounce, Dez has a chance to be really good.
2021 Dashawn Jackson, Frederick Douglass – Jackson had a good weekend scoring the ball but he has to improve as a facilitator and playing with the ball in his hands. Dashawn has the potential to be a D1 player but he has to step his game up as an on court leader and settle his team down when things get chaotic.
