ORANGE, Ca.—The Magic Memorial/Adidas Gauntlet Regional Qualifier at Orange Lutheran High was yet another outstanding stop on the Grassroots recruiting trail. Etop Edo Ema and his staff do an outstanding job of attracting the very best from the Adidas circuit as evidenced by the outstanding performances—most notably Evan Mobley (Compton Magic).
Chibuzo Agbo (Compton Magic)
2020, PF/WF, 6-foot-5, 220 pounds
Agbo projects well to the Mid-Major level as a stretch 4-manJoel’s Take: Agbo projects well to the Mid-Major level as a face-up 4-man in my opinion. He isn’t overly explosive, but he plays at a great pace, doesn’t force the issue off the dribble, and he is a reliable shooter from distance. His rebounding prowess and ability to carve out space stood out this weekend as well. Overall, he operates well from the elbow due to his touch, but needs to get more productive attacking in the paint to expand his scoring package.
Darryl Jackson (Compton Magic)
2020, CG, 6-foot, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Jacdson, who plays for Etiwanda, personifies that program with his intensity and grit at both ends of the floor. He is an aggressive attacker off the dribble, can knock in the open shot, and defensively he has active hands and ideal lateral quickness. Overall, he was a definite spark in Compton Magic’s run to the championship.
CJ McMillan (Team Lillard)
2021, PF, 6-foot-5, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: McMillan looks like a Division 1 defensive end and he plays with reckless abandon. With a Draymond Green-like attitude he pushed his team to the championship tilt against Compton Magic. He gobbles up rebounds, carves out space in the paint, and can finish through contact.
Jonah Alvarez (Team Lillard)
2021, SG, 6-foot-2, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: In the semi-finals Alvarez drained six 3’s from everywhere on the court. He sets up his shot well, is always on balance, and his release is impeccable. He doesn’t force the issue on the offensive end and can set up teammates with the pass. Continuing to work on his playmaking ability off the dribble will elevate his stock.
