Floor Generals: Georgia’s set of elite PGs
Many have considered this year as the Golden Age for point guards in Georgia for the class of 2020. The role of the point guard have revolutionized over the years as we see more score-first guards who are capable of running the floor and scoring at will in respect to the other positions of the floor. Elite point guards are constantly evolving, but here are some key players to mark on your radar for hoops this summer and the 2020 basketball season for the floor generals.
Sharife Cooper at the 2017 City of Palms Classic.
Sharife Cooper (McCeachern): The 6-0 point guard has became a recognizable name not only for the state of Georgia, but nationality as well. Cooper is an all-around guard, who simply lets his game speak for itself. Cooper is a guard who utilizes his game to uplift his teammates around him and plays dynamic. With great quickness and floor vision, Cooper has the ability to score in transition or open scoring up for his teammates. Averaging 27.2 ppg and leading his team to a GHSA state title last year, Cooper is a player who can take on much of the scoring load for his team and lead them to success. He is a natural scorer and can be a scoring machine for his team and get the job done on the defensive end.
2020 PG Deivon Smith at the 2018 TOC Classic. Photo by Ty Freeman.Deivon Smith (Grayson): With major leaping ability, Deivon Smith is not afraid to attack the rim and finish with authority if need be. Standing at 5’11 and 160-pounds, Smith’s game takes up for his short stature as the guard plays above the rim. The Grayson guard loves to play physical with defenders and is very explosive when driving the lane, finishing at the rim. Smith, who is also a member of the Atlanta Celtics AAU team, will be a big name to follow in the Georgia Hoop circuit this summer.
Xavier commit 2020 PG Dwon Odom in last year’s state championship game at Georgia Tech.Dwon Odom (St. Francis): Another athletic guard in the bunch that plays explosive in St. Frances point guard Down Odom. The Xavier commit is respected as around the state as scorer and enforcer on both ends of the floor. Odom is not afraid to isolate and use his size and physicality to attack the paint. He looks to either dish to a teammate or score if needed to. He battles in the paint amongst other as well, with him averaging 5.0 rpg Odom also has great bounce and can put on a show with his in-game dunks.
2020 point guard KD Johnson at the 2017 On the Radar Showcase. Photo by Ty Freeman.K.D. Johnson (Southwest Dekalb): When you think of guards who can guard the best in the region, K.D. Johnson is one those defensive players who plays lights out. Johnson a 6-1, 170-pound from Decatur, Georgia can defend either position and uses active hands to rack in most of his steals. The Southwest Dekalb point guard led his team to the GHSA Final Four back in March and is definitely on many major programs recruiting radar for the class of 2020.
