The tournament runs for a week, culminating in a championship at the end. I was able to attend the tournament on Wednesday, June 26, the event’s third day. The afternoon games featured Loyola/Maranatha and Mater Dei/University. Here’s a look at some of the top standouts from those two games that I saw.
1. Remington Rofer – Loyola 2021
Rofer is a very skilled player who can play multiple positions. He has both guard and forward skills. He’s strong on the glass, fighting for putbacks off of offensive rebounds. He may not look incredibly strong, but he is, and he holds his position in the post. He’s a versatile scorer who can mix it up in the post and on the wing. Good shooter from three-point range.
2. Terrance Hampton – Maranatha
A very good rebounder who is constantly fighting for position in the paint when it comes to crashing the boards. One area on the court where he is comfortable at is the high post. He can operate out of the high post very well. His passing from the high post is solid, he’s able to find open shooters and cutters as well. On the offensive end, his shooting extends out to three-point range.
3. Uriah Foster – Maranatha 2021
It’s very rare these days to see to a player who is firmly committed to defense, a player who makes defense a real big part of their game. Foster is definitely one of those players. He definitely showed off his ability to get points, but defense is where he really stood out. He contests everything, no shot comes easy for the player he’s guarding. He can block shots too, he’s got great timing on his blocks. He isn’t afraid to step in a draw a charge too.
4. Aidan Prukop – Mater Dei 2020
Prukop is a shooter in every sense of the word. If he’s open, he’s lights out from anywhere on the court. He spots up well, and he can pullup in transition and let it fly from three-point range. But shooting isn’t all there is to his game. He can put the ball on the floor and attack. He gets to the rim and finishes, and he utilizes the couple hard dribble pullups to get shots. Utilizes screens well to get himself free.
5. David Cheatom – University 2020
Cheatom is a flat out scorer. He’s got a ton of offensive moves in his arsenal. He’s very comfortable and effective at creating his own shot. He’s very athletic and can get into the lane with ease. He has great body control at the rim, he finishes with contact and can get to the free-throw line. Able to bait defenders into committing fouls on the perimeter by using fakes. His offensive prowess opens up looks for the rest of the team.
6. Harrison Hornery – Mater Dei 2021
An incoming junior, it’s scary to think that he still has another year left of high school basketball after this upcoming one. He’s a very skilled and versatile big man who can do a little bit of everything on the basketball court. He establishes position in the post and he attacks the rim with authority. He can also handle the ball in transition and initiate the offense. Good shooter from the three-point line.
