The 6-foot-10, 265-pounder has gone from just a big body in the middle to a highly productive post who can pass and play inside and out. Weir’s improvement has resulted in five scholarship offers prior to the start of his senior year.
The University of New Orleans and coach Mark Slessinger were the latest program to offer Weir on Monday night. He previously had been offered by Appalachian State, Bryant, Mercer and Wofford. Bryant was the first to offer.
“He’s coming along great,” Chaminade-Madonna coach Andre Torres said Sunday from FABC Fort Lauderdale. “Right now he’s lost a lot of weight. Really made a commitment to his body and I think to move up to the next level that’s something he has to do.
“He’s moving better, more comfortable with what his game can be. He’s got a lot of versatility. He’s got great hands .,.. he can go right, left … great feet … rebounds well … is getting better defensively and taking up space. He can step out.”
Weir and Chaminade went 3-1 at the FABC Camp, with the lone loss coming vs. Forest Hill. The Lions went 6-0 at the FGCU Camp and were a combined 9-0 at camps at Mercer, Wofford and the University of Georgia. That is good for 18-1.
Weir spent his freshman season at Cardinal Gibbons before transferring to Chaminade. He will be looked up this season for more scoring and leadership with the graduation of Georgia signee Toumani Camara.
“[Coach], he’s looking for me to be more assertive, definitely,” Weir said. “Toumani’s gone so we obviously don’t have the same amount of offense that we had last year. So we’ve got to change things up. But it’s not too different of a game plan.”
Chaminade added a little more firepower this offseason with addition of Coral Springs Charter transfer Ivan Reynolds. Reynolds goes 6-4.
“He can play multiple positions,” Torres said. “Very selfless … great defensively. He is learning us, we are learning him. Great motor. Great competitor. He’s going to bring a lot to the table for us and fills us a void we don’t have as far as he can guard guards, he can guard bigger. He rebounds well.”
Asked what he is looking for on the next level, Weir said: “I just want a college that is going to treat me right. Look out for my best interests and develop me to where I want to go.”
Weir plays with Team Florida Hoops on the adidas travel circuit. The squad will be competing in Birmingham, Ala., during the live period in July.
