Archbishop McCarthy, Chaminade-Madonna, McArthur, North Broward Prep, St. Thomas Aquinas, South Plantation and Taravella all hosted games Friday night. Here are the final scores from South Plantation High on Day 1, followed by Friday’s top performers:
Paxon School 53, Delray Atlantic 35
Wellington 67, Fort Myers Canterbury 38
First Baptist Academy 63, St. Thomas Aquinas Gold 43
De’ante Perez (2020), Wellington
The rising senior guard led a balanced Wellington attack with 21 points in a one-sided victory over Canterbury. Perez (pictured) drilled four 3-pointers among his eight made field goals and 21 total points. Coach Matt Colin gets a lot from Perez: Besides his scoring, he rebounds well, is a good passer and cutter, and plays D at the other end. “He just looks for me to be a leader,” Perez said of coach Colin. “Shoot the ball, score when we need to score and do what I’ve got to do to get the win. Honestly that’s all I do. I just listen to coach and follow the game plan.” Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pa., and St. Mary’s in New Jersey are recruiting Perez early on. 2021 Christopher Walker and 2020 Nick Green added 11 points apiece.
Isaiah Adams (2020), Paxon
The versatile 6-foot-6 Adams started slow as Atlantic trailed Paxon by just three, 20-17, at the half. But the Division-I prospect would get it going in the second half, scoring from everywhere on the court. The left-hander finished with nine field goals — including two 3-pointers — en route to a 23-point, 9-rebound, 6-block performance.
Trace Darby (2020), First Baptist
There is a lot to like about the 6-4 Darby — a transfer from Canterbury.
Darby is a smooth operator who can score with both hands. Coach Scott Stewart has a shooter with good size that can run the floor. FBA jumped out to a 16-0 lead before St. Thomas Aquinas Gold (its younger of two squads participating) could get on the board.
Maurice Willie (2021), Paxon
The 5-8 2021 point guard is an excellent slasher going to the basket and he hits his free throws when he gets fouled. Willie connected on three field goals — including one 3 — and three free throws to finish with 10 points vs. Atlantic. Sixth-year coach Toby Frazier returns his whole team from last year’s 6A final four run.
Chase Garrett (2021), Canterbury
The 6-3 Garrett led Cougars with 13 points in the loss to Wellington. He connected on five field goals, including one 3. Does a nice job getting to the rim on his drives.
The action will continue throughout Broward on both Saturday and Sunday.
