I was able to attend the event on the final day of the tournament this past Saturday. Here’s a look at some of the top standouts that I saw.
1. Eric Peacock Jr. – King/Drew 2020
An incoming senior, Peacock looks like he is coming into his own as a scorer. He sees the floor well and he moves well without the ball to get open and be in position to score. He’s looking like a good midrange shooter and a good three-point shooter. When running the break, he’s looking for his teammates in transition. On the defensive end, he plays tough. He’s a good defender on the perimeter and contests shots well.
2. Jackson Barnhill – Long Beach Wilson 2020
Barnhill is a very versatile big man. He definitely epitomizes today’s changing game with big men being able to do more than just play in the post. He’s got a quick shooting release for a big man with range out to the three-point line. He spots up from distance like a wing. But he can also play in the paint too. He’s quick and decisive in the post and has good hands. He can pass well out of the post too.
3. William Lawson – Crenshaw 2021
Still a young player, Lawson looks like he could develop into a real post threat for Crenshaw by his senior year. He has good awareness when catches the ball in the post. He establishes position in the paint well and can score in a variety of ways. He can hit defenders with a traditional low post moves or go to a nice little turnaround jumper. One thing though that really stands out is his communication on the court and encouragement of his teammates.
4. Amound Anderson – Leuzinger 2020
The lefty shooter has become one of the top scoring threats in the Southland. He’s got a ton of offensive moves in his bag. He can create his own shot on the perimeter and hit fadeaways and step back jumpers, or he’ll back up a bit and let it fly from three-point range. If defenders play him for the shot, he’ll attack off the dribble and get to the rim. He can rebound well for a wing and he’s got some playmaking to his game as well.
5. Jabari Steward – Compton 2020
The incoming senior has all the tools to establish himself as a true defensive anchor in the paint. Whenever a player gets into the lane and puts up a shot around the rim, Steward will be there to contest the shot and make it difficult. He has good timing on his blocks, he can block a shot straight up, or act as the help defender. Offensively, he’s tough to guard when he makes a move in the post. He’s got good footwork and good patience. Solid free-throw shooter for a big man.
