Many of the players on this list have improved since the last time I saw them play, while others made a great first impression. One thing is for sure, the University of Dayton’s team camp was a nice battleground for several senior-to-be guards to showcase their skills.
Conner Maciag (Pickerington Central)
Maciag looked much different than the last time I saw him during April AAU action. The sharpshooting guard showed off his slashing ability against a talented Moeller team during camp. Demonstrating more confidence off the dribble drive, Connor has emerged as a multi-level scoring option for a Tigers squad hungry to replace much of their backcourt.
Jack Smith (Alter)
Playing for Apex on the Adidas Gauntlet has helped Smith’s offensive game. The 2 guard, known more for being a catch-and-shoot player for Alter a year ago, was much more aggressive on the dribble drive, finding ways to get into the paint against an athletic Walnut Ridge team. The confidence is much higher for Smith as he used his body to play through contact against bigger Scots defenders. If this translates into play in November, Jack with have a chance to be the Knights dribble drive threat on the offensive end.
Qian Magwood (Walnut Ridge)
I was definitely impressed during my first time seeing Magwood play. The lefty point guard has a ton of speed and had no trouble getting the Scots out in transition. A gifted passer and a tremendous athlete, Magwood has great court vision and does a nice job of drawing defenses on him. With Magwood dishing the ball off to players like Kaveon Ross during the season, I can see him racking up multiple assists during the season.
Derrick Hardin (Worthington Christian)
Hardin is a hard worker and demands respect on both ends of the floor. On the offensive side of the ball, he showed off his sharp shooting abilities. Possessing solid form, great concentration, and a quick trigger, Hardin got hot early in a win against Beechcroft, knocking down three triples in the first 10 minutes of play. Defensively, he contested rebounds among very athletic opponents with Beechcroft. Not allowing anyone to push him around, Hardin showed off his high motor and was one of the top SGs on display.
Willeon Yates (Springboro)
Yates looked much improved for the Panthers in a great game with Aiken. He protected the basketball much better and handled defensive pressure much easier. A lightning fast guard, he sees the floor even when facing double teams and traps, and did a much better job of distributing the basketball to avoid turnovers. I think he has a chance to be an even better player if he develops his shooting and plays a little more aggressive in attacking the rim.
Josiah Fulcher (Lima Senior)
In my first game seeing Fulcher play, I have to say his athleticism is what stood out to me. One of the better defenders I saw, he has a lot of quickness and moves side-to-side well. He even had a nice chase down block in which he pinned the ball off the backboard. I wasn’t able to see a ton of his offensive game, but with him receiving several D1 offers so far this summer, I would say he has the skills to be a next level player.
