CSU San Marcos Team Camp – Top players
AJ Burgin, 6-3 2021 G, San Diego
Burgin was dominant for long stretches of the camp, scoring from three levels. Known for a long-range shooting, Burgin has blossomed into a diverse offensive threat, scoring in the post against smaller guards and finishing assertive drives through contact.
James Hapgood, 6-2 2022 G, La Jolla Country Day
Hapgood, a rangy combo guard, has become the leader of the new-look Torreys, capably doubling as a scorer and primary playmaker. Hapgood gets to the basket and finishes with either hand, and has an improved mid-range attack to boot. But I was most impressed with his leadership and intangibles.
Cameron Rentie, 6-2 2020 G, Murrieta Mesa
Rentie doubles as a very capable scorer and defensive stopper, as he displayed throughout the weekend. He always guards the other team’s top player, regardless of position, and plays with a level of physicality few can match. Offensively, he can get hot from deep, which he displayed in his 30-point performance in a win against San Diego.
Tyson Robinson, 5-11 2021 PG, El Camino
On a weekend where the Wildcats were shorthanded, Robinson willed the team to some improbable wins. The compact point guard has nice burst and gets into the paint pretty much at will, and draws a lot of fouls as a result. His pull-up jumper is an underrated part of his arsenal, which he displayed down the stretch in a comeback win over Orange Glen.
Quadre Johnson, 6-1 2020 G, LA Poly
Relentless is the best word to describe Johnson, a positionless “basketball player” who impacts the game with his incredible motor. Johnson is an elite rebounder for his size, crashing the glass and pursuing rebounds even after the defense seemingly has them. Offensively, he has great burst and scores on strong drives to the basket, but has some wiggle and showed some handle in the open court. He might have been the biggest surprise of the camp.
