The event gave Cougars head coach B.J. Foster a chance to evaluate potential recruits for the D2 program. While probably not yet on the Cougars radar, these 2022s are on mine.
CSU San Marcos Team Camp – Top 2022 prospects
Nick Payne, 6-2 SG, Escondido
Payne has nice size and a solid offensive package. He can shoot it off the catch and create mid-range opportunities off the dribble (step backs, side steps). Improving his court vision so he can see other options off the bounce is the next step for him.
Lewis Singleterry, 5-10 PG, Murrieta Mesa
Built more like a tailback than a PG, Singleterry is a shifty score-first point guard who can score from three levels. He likes to deliver the highlight pass and has good court vision, but his first instincts are to get the bucket himself.
Marc Begin, 5-11 PG, La Jolla Country Day
Conversely, Begin has a long, lanky frame but looks like he has a few more inches left. As it stands, he appears to be taking a big step forward in Year 2. He never gets sped up, smoothly changes gears and is the consummate pass-first point guard. But Begin, like most of his teammates, can shoot it off the catch and has a nice mid-range pull-up. He also has a crafty layup package that will only improve as he gets physically stronger. He’s a star in the making.
Tate Smith, 6-2 SG, La Jolla Country Day
Begin’s teammate, Smith, has grown about 4 inches since last fall, and has great measurables (long arms, broad shoulders). He shoots the ball with confidence off the catch and showed the ability to score off of one-to-two dribbles. He has to get stronger, and improve his handle against pressure, but the pieces are there.
Justin White, 6-4 PF, Mission Hills
White impacts the game in a lot of ways for the Grizzlies, but he showed flashes of improved ball skills and scoring ability. He hit a couple of deep jumpers off the catch and hit a few one-dribble pull-ups. He needs to become more assertive offensively, but things are coming together for this up-and-coming prospect.
