One of the underrated qualities to have is being to space the floor. Well, it was surely on display at the event. Here is who stood out.
Myles Purchase – Cherry Creek
Looking at his overall game it is clear that he brings so many other things to the table such as toughness, a defensive leader and a guard that sees the floor well and makes the right play but for some reason every single time I see him he is knocking down shots. Purchase is a set shooter that extends the floor with his outside shot. He can shoot it on the move or pull up himself but in the showcase, he was able to show off a consistent shooting stroke.
Dalton Peterson—Encampment K-12
Peterson was a player that was confident in his shot and kept letting them fly as the day went on. He was consistently knocking down deep shotws which shows he has unlimited range and was able to get going in the afternoon game as he was able to knock down three in a row in a crucial time to keep his team afloat.
Kyrie Thomas—DSST Byers
Thomas was a floor general that took over guard duties with other good ball handlers on the court which was something to buy into but he was also able to finally get going from deep. Not often do you see a smaller guard that controls the tempo also be able to shoot it which made it interesting as he was shooting contested shots, off of the dribble and knocked down both of his catch and shoot shots that I seen. Thomas works really well off ball which helps but is a bit smaller so being able to shoot it will give him more minutes and ample opportunity to stay on the court as he is also a pest on defense as well.
Brenden Crowther— Alamosa
Crowther was a new name to me so it was interesting to see him get going and not slow down. There were not set plays so it was interesting to see him move without the ball so much that the ball ended up finding his hands and from there he created for himself. He creates for himself and can shoot it from beyond the arc as well as in set spots around the mid-range. Being able to create off of the dribble will also go a long way for him and he was a sniper on the day to put on our radars.
Tristan Hurdle—Highlands Ranch
This was my first time getting to watch Hurdle in person but what stands out is his size which allows him to easily shoot over defenders. He gets to the right spots and finds the holes in the defense to create space for himself. From there he uses his size to take a step over and that generates space for himself. He is a player that can put it on the floor and also get to the rim which makes the defense have to choose which one to try and take away and he has unlimited range as he is a player that you have to respect as soon as he crosses half-court or he will make you pay as he did at the showcase.
Jordan Montgomery—Rancho Christian
To have to travel that far for a showcase it was evident that something would have to be different for him and it ended up being his jumper. He was doing a bit of everything but what stood out most was his range as he consistently found the open spots in the defense for knockdown jumpers. He shows a good shooting stroke is confident in his shot as he could not find his stroke early but once he got going it was lights out. Montgomery works well in PnR situations and is a player that you run plays for as he will execute and knock down a good amount of open looks. He was able to also defend relatively well and did not back down to anybody that came his way as he played hard-nosed defense on guards and held his own as well as on the block down low with the bigs. He is a microwave shooter that can get going at any time.
