Calvary Christian Summer League: Week 2 standouts
Final scores Wednesday from Week 2 of the Calvary Christian Summer League in Fort Lauderdale:
Calvary Christian 51, Piper 25
St. Andrew’s 64, Western 46
Pine Crest 64, Forest Hill 50
If you know high school basketball in the state of Florida, you will know the names Gregg Glenn III of Calvary Christian; Yussif Basa-Ama of St. Andrew’s; and Amen and Ausar Thompson of Pine Crest.
In today’s report, however, I am going to look at some of the lesser known student-athletes that are on the rise.
Dylan Canoville (2021) Calvary Christian
Canoville has nice size at 6-feet-4 and is an explosive leaper. He connected on five field goals — including a 3-pointer — and finished with 13 points in the W over Piper. 2022 Bryce Maxey also chipped in 7 points.
Jalen Jeter (2021), Forest Hill
The 5-8 guard was the leading scorer from all three games Wednesday night. Jeter was in double-digits before halftime and kept the Falcons in the game vs. Pine Crest. Has a nice shot from deep. Hit several 3-pointers.
Devin Hines (2021), St. Andrew’s
The 6-4 Hines is athletic and a leaper. He came over to the Scots from Cardinal Newman. Connected on four field goals and finished with 9 points in the victory. 2021 Kenneth Turner II — at 6-6 1/2 — also provides size along with Basa-Ama and Joshua Minott.
Matthew Robinson (2021), Western
Robinson came off the bench and gave Western some size against the much-taller, deeper St. Andrew’s Scots. He scored 10 points — including one 3-pointer — and drew the task of guarding the 6-9 Basa-Ama. Western will need to play tough defense and be able to get out on the break with their size. 2020 guard Manuel Buroz did a nice job with 12 points.
Jaiden Miller (2022) & Zach Smith (2020), Piper
Smith and Miller were the Piper offense. The duo combined for 21 of the Bengals’ 25 points. The older Smith had four field goals — including a 3 — en route to 11 points. He is quick and has some shake to his game. Miller finished with 10 points.
