The visitors from St. Andrew’s would claim a 52-48 victory.
The finish
Rising senior Jack May converted a Calvary turnover with 21 seconds remaining to put the Scots up 50-48. 2020 LD Variance would have a chance to tie it at the free-throw line for Calvary with 5 seconds left but could not knock it down at the line. A slam by 2020 Yussif Basa-Ama at the buzzer made it a four-point verdict. Calvary had led 29-24 at the half.
Entering 35th season
Head coach John O’Connell is heading into his 35th season at St. Andrew’s. He is excited about the possibilities with this club.
“A lot of talent,” O’Connell said. “It’s amazing how much talent on that team [Calvary], too, and that’s our region. I think we’ll have a lot of depth, where we didn’t have depth last year.”
Asked how many more years he thought he would coach, O’Connell said: “What I tell my bosses, when I lose energy I’ll stop. I’m not going to milk it. But no I’m excited. I haven’t lost the energy yet.”
Versatile lefty
2021 forward Joshua Minott led the Scots in scoring. He had two 3-pointers among his five buckets. May, the son of FAU head coach Dusty May, also canned two 3-pointers and finished in double-digits.
“He opens up the floor,” O’Connell said of May. “He’s savvy. He’s a lefty, which is unique to a lot of kids. He gives you a nice dimension of that guy who can shoot and shot fake, and get to the rim as well.”
Not close to a decision
Basa-Ama is a major D-I prospect. He said he is not close to making a decision on which college he will attend. The 6-9 St. Andrew’s standout has had an impressive spring playing with Team Parsons on the travel circuit.
“Talking to my family, coach, what he’s told me right now is take my time,” Basa-Ama said. “Go on the visits, get to know most of the teams. Who is coming? Who is leaving? See what is the best place for me. So I am still looking into that.”
No Gregg Glenn
Variance, 2021 Noah Tovar and 2021 Dylan Canonville all finished in double figures for Calvary. Tovar has taken some nice steps while playing with Florida Pro Hoops on the travel circuit. The explosive Canonville had two big dunks Wednesday.
“Our guys are getting better,” Calvary coach Cilk McSweeney said. “They are older. Obviously we are missing Gregg [Glenn] tonight and we have two new freshmen in. But this is what it’s all about is getting better. We’re playing versus a team that four starters came back that went to regional finals. So it was a good test.”
Glenn is in Brazil playing with USA Basketball on the 16U national team.
