Breakdown Summer Showcase – Top Five
Jax Madson of Mankato East. Despite feeling under the weather Jax Madson first helped the Cougars beat Chaska then scored ten points with six boards and some assists in an overtime win over Park Center. Madson saved his best for rival Austin who opened the game on a 14-0 run vs the Cougars. Madson responded with 31 points in a running time game hitting on 11-20 field goal shooting that included four threes and five of five foul shooting putting the game away. Madson’s ability to navigate the Austin zone and score at the arc led to the victory. Who has the Big Nine and Class AAA momentum heading into next year? I’d say Mankato East does after this game.
Agwa Nywesh of Austin. Agwa scored 44 points in three games hitting a total of nine triples in three games including four against Mankato East. Nywesh created for others and continues to be one of the best players in transition that Minnesota has. His biggest impact that may be what Nywesh does running to the ball in the zone. His aggressive approach to the trap and the passing lane makes him a defensive force.
Trey Longstreet of Delano. The time for Trey Longstreet is now. Trey stands about 6-foot-5 and his teams both in high school and AAU basketball have used him in numerous roles. Yesterday I saw Trey hit some shots from the perimeter, handle the ball, rebound, and go aggressively at the basket. We’ve seen him defend with Minnesota Heat and Delano plus we’ve seen him be the best entry passer and ball reversal guy on the floor. Yesterday Trey was the best player on the floor when we saw him against Maple River and the Park Center JV.
David Ijadimbola of Park Center. There are players that compete to win and there are players that compete because it’s but they don’t always like the challenge. I am thoroughly convinced that David is a guy that loves the challenge. I recall those 43 Hoops/Fury Zurn games of the past, the game winner David hit this year for Park Center after missing his previous attempts, and now I add yesterday’s 20 point, 15 rebound performance (there are others, I am just naming things off the top of my head). Let’s be honest David wasn’t getting much from his teammates, so he took it all on his shoulders. That’s why he aggressively went after 15 boards in traffic. That’s why David scored 14 straight points pushing his team to overtime. Mankato East had five guys in double figures so the balance overwhelmed his team but the 20 and 15 from David was greatly respected.
Puoch Dobuol of St. Cloud Apollo. You remember Puoch making life miserable for now offered bigs at the Comets Shootout right? Or some of the games he played with Inspired Athletics on the Prep Hoops Circuit? Many asked who he was. Puoch is a 6-foot-6 jumping jack with great length, huge strides, and quick bounce. He has a hunger for swats and slams and even though he didn’t play high school hoops last year, Puoch is working hard to be a factor for Apollo this year. Had a nice weekend helping Apollo to a Summer Showcase title.
Five More
Moses Idris of Austin. Austin has more players coming Minnesota, be ready. At the moment I believe Moses Idris will be a nice second option with Nywesh. He shot the ball well again this weekend scoring 16 in game one and 11 in game two.
Pal Kueth of Mankato East. Pal has done a great job fitting in with his talented older teammates, yesterday he had 7/8 in the title game, a dozen in the win over Park Center.
Chang Hoth of St. Cloud Apollo. In the title game when Apollo defeated Orono to earn the weekend title, Hoth scored 15 with a pair of threes.
Jordan Merseth of Mankato East. The Mankato East leading rebounder had 20 rebounds in three games yesterday plus scored in double figures twice.
Ariel Bland of Eden Prairie. EP only had six guys but in the two games we watched Ariel play he had double-doubles of 14/12 and 16/11.
Who was that man?
Albert Lea guy. Albert Lea had a raw 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 strong player that had some of the most explosive plays of the day. He ran very well, was quick off his feet and we are told that he spent some type at Prior Lake before moving to Albert Lea. He had a great game against Park Center’s second squad and has some real potential. Unfortunately we were never able to get a clear name. Talented player though.
