33 varsity teams and one JV battled it out for 3 days. High level competition brought out the best in everyone. Teams learned a lot about themselves in some tough games and hopefully they can take it with them into next weeks live period.
Here were some of the rising soph or freshman standouts:
2022
Damarion Pouncil C 6’6 160 South Mountain
-He may be one of the longest players in the class. Freaky wingspan and bounce. He blocks anything near him with his athleticism, timing and length plus rebounds well. He dunks the ball effortlessly but has to make overall strides with his offensive game and court awareness.
Aaron Foote SF 6’4 150 Hamilton
-One of the better shooting forwards in the class. He is currently a perimeter shooter but it looks good on every attempt. Once he gets stronger he will be able to go closer to the basket more and rebound at a higher level.
Kyle Sandler SF 6’4 175 Regis Jesuit (CO)
-Top tier shooter from the perimeter. High arcing jumper and gets it off quickly. Cerebral player can defend inside and is decent in space. A little bit of a tweener currently but a fluid athlete.
Will Dubuc PF 6’4 Desert Mountain
-Long forward who is highly effective near the basket. He has a lot of post moves and is very patient for his age. High level rebounder using his length, timing, athleticism and a good second jumper. Can face-up from elbow and in and if he can extend his range out, he will be even more of a problem.
Pike Tancil SG 6’0 Willow Canyon
-Thick scoring guard. He loves getting downhill and using his thick frame to score it. He has a jumper from the elbow and in and is a physical player.
2023
DeMarion Anderson PG 5’9 Youngker
-Good young PG has nice court vision, quickness and a tighter handle. He can score it from deep with range but his passing makes his game work. He passes with his left and just as well as his dominant right and is a stud off the pick and roll game. One of the better young west side guards out there. (Pictured)
Derek English SF 6’2 Buckeye
-Athletic wing is already starting on varsity. He has a great frame/build and likes getting downhill. He has good length and he is very physical defender. He is active all over the court and in one year, he may be the face of the program.
Andrew Camacho PG 5’11 Peoria
-Feel for the game is really high. Great passer and a good scorer. He has the floater game plus is a good shooter from deep. He is not a blur but understands how to change speeds and hesitates to go by his defender.
