33 varsity teams and one JV battled it out for 3 days. High level competition brought out the best in everyone. Teams learned a lot about themselves in some tough games and hopefully they can take it with them into next weeks live period.
Here were some of the rising junior standouts that I hadn’t talked about yet:
Carson Basham C 6’10 225 Sunnyslope HS
-Keeps improving his fluidity with his body making him a better prospect. He has shooting range out to the HS 3pt line and can handle the ball way better than ever before. Makes good passes out of the double team and his game is soaring to new heights. He can still react a little quicker on defense but blocks shots and rebounds at a good rate. He has legit high level size, length and skill. He dunks the ball very easy with his length and size and has improved every year since 8th grade.
John Solomon PF 6’8 200 Desert Vista
-A new player who moved in from Florida. He is the son of former NFL linebacker John Solomon, but is actually being raised by former MLB star Bobby Bonilla. He looks the part with great length and comes in with a 6’11 wingspan. He uses his length to rebound and block shots and is very skilled. He always closes out to shooters. He has a consistent stroke from the perimeter and can handle the ball well. He is a good passer and although he may not be the high riser, his IQ, skill and length get it done.
Grady Lewis C/PF 6’7 210 Sunnyslope
-Bouncy 5-man is strong, long and good around the hoop. He works near the paint best and uses his length and strength plus budding skill to score and rebound the ball at a high level. He can move in space well defensively and is a great covering the pick and roll or scoring off of it.
Dender Ceder C 6’10 210 AZ Compass Prep
-Long defensive post player is starting to move better. He is very good defensively using his strength and long arms. He can score it in the post on basic moves but still could make strides with his offensive game. His strength, length, size, defense and pure upside are intriguing D1 traits. He came in from the Netherlands.
Ty Bergrman PF 6’6 180 Regis Jesuit (CO)
-Going to be a big kid. Long arms, moves well and can really shoot it from deep. Defends in his post and rebounds using his length and timing. Can create his own offense in the post with a nice handle. Good hands to catch difficult passes in post.
Joe Kelsey PG 5’10 145 Desert Ridge
-Scoring lead guard has one of the nicest shooting strokes in the state. He gets hot in a blink of an eye. Once the first one goes down, then the basket seems to get bigger and bigger. Deep range, quick stroke and can pull-up or use the floater. He has good speed to get by his defender and is a smart floor general. He is more scoring and shooting type than a pure facilitator.
Marcus Wady PG 5’9 150 Desert Vista
-Jet quick scoring lead guard keeps improving. He is slowly improving his deep ball and has a knack for getting in the lane and scoring with a floater, a drive through contact or dropping it off to a teammate. He is quick on the ball defensively and is very competitive.
