33 varsity teams and one JV battled it out for 3 days. High level competition brought out the best in everyone. Teams learned a lot about themselves in some tough games and hopefully they can take it with them into next weeks live period.
Here were some of the rising senior standouts that are clearly under the radar:
Michel Milambu CG 6’0 170 Tempe
-Long athletic defensive slasher. Has a quick first step to get by his defender with a good layup package. He moves his feet quick laterally and is one of the better defenders on the ball. He will pick you up 94-feet and hound you all the way up the court. He is very competitive plus is a natural leader always talking to his teammates putting them in the proper position on defense. He is a capable catch and shoot 3pt shooter plus sees the court well. 1st time watching him this weekend and came away impressed.
Josh Oliver CG 6’1 175 San Tan Charter
-Physical guard is very skilled. He likes getting downhill with his strength scoring through contact but is best catching and shooting from deep. He has quick release and a compact stroke. He is a smart passer making plays for others and a physical defender. He doesn’t have top end speed but uses skill, tighter handle and strength to get it done.
Cesar Lopez SF 6’3 160 Tri-City
-Uber athletic wing who is a quick twitch athlete. He has some serious springs and he is a good defender on the ball. He can get downhill and is a good rebounder. He is a catch perimeter shooter and keeps improving his overall game. He could improve his court awareness moving forward.
Cameron Snyder PG 5’10 155 Tempe
-Scoring lead guard is very crafty and skilled. He can shoot it from deep plus gets into the lane with a nice handle. Plays a smart floor game and is trying to make his teammates better. Soft touch on his jumper from the 3pt line and uses his IQ to make many plays. Very competitive on defense despite him being a little thin.
Keyshon Upchurch PG 5’8 165 Seton Catholic
-Tough hard-nosed defender. Strong upper body strength and speed. Built like a running back who can get into the lane using his tight handle and body. Uses the floater well and is much improved shot maker. He has deeper 3pt range and can pull-up off the dribble.
Tyler Holmes PG 6’0 150 American Leadership Academy-Queen Creek
-High IQ lead guard can shoot it. Passes it with either hand and plays a smart floor game. Has an unorthodox shot but is very efficient with it. He can pull-up from mid-range and is one of the reasons they will be a true contender to win it all next year. He will need to get stronger to defend his position better moving forward.
Jon Holiday W 6’1 160 Goldwater
-Scoring guard with some serious speed. Out runs virtually anyone on the break and is a quick at turning the corner on his defender. Will have to develop more of a perimeter game.
