BCAT Team Orange Evals
The BCAT Hoopfest Top 100 Combine brought together 80+ of the top 90ish guys in the state. The talent amassed really impressed both college coaches and event coordinators. Many players sparkled, but this particular piece only addresses the talents, skills, and weaknesses of Team Orange.
The number before was their jersey number on the day. The number in parentheses is their current PrepHoopsTN ranking. You can read the full rankings:
Team Orange featured just three seniors (Mason, Anderson, Swift), but those three handled the ball consistently. Younger players like Dia, Anderson, and Dylan Woods did damage with fewer touches.
Team 3 Orange
8- Rodney Mason (PrepHoopsTN #19) — Drove laterally into the lane and at the last second strided towards the front of the rim and smacked home a dunk in traffic. Eye-opening. Rodney’s handle is a lot better than last season. He is closer to playing as an attacking wing. Defensively, Rodney is a dream. Powerful, committed. J Law couldn’t check him. His jumper is still concerning.
1- Joe Anderson (PrepHoopsTN #32) — Gets where he wants to get. Passes sharply on time. Ideal point guard. Quick hands. Checking Kavion McClain. Did admirably. He has among the quickest hands in the state. Joe is not elite perimeter defender with his feet, but his hands are so active and disruptive. Joe has so many subtle, little movements that trick defenders. He makes defenders think they know where the ball is going, but he encourages that misinformation campaign. Sees gaps and small weaknesses in the defense as well as anybody.
3- John Windley (PrepHoopsTN #36) — Because Alex Anderson and Malik Dia decided to be point guards, Windley barely got used offensively. It is a shame too, because this team lacks outside shooting prowess. Windley could have helped in that regard. He also is a capable passer. Again, his touches were extremely rare and his influence next to nothing.
6- Tray Swift (PrepHoopsTN #109) — Very fast. Attacks and attacks some more. Smallish. Kind of a combo guard.
4- Matthew Sells (PrepHoopsTN #21) — Created a few shots. Didn’t blow by guys like he does on EAB 16u. Baseball outlet pass to Tray Swift was special. No ego.
7- Dylan Woods (PrepHoopsTN #33) — Amazing second leaper. Really, really good open floor speed. Took jump balls. Explosive legs.
5- Malik Dia (2022! / PrepHoopsTN Combine All-Star) — — Crossed and hit jumper on J Lawson. Always, always attacking. Supreme belief in his ability to make something happen. Impressive length. Takes bad shots sometimes, but he makes more than you would expect.
2- Brandon Maclin (PrepHoopsTN #17) — Powerful strides.
9- Alex Anderson (PrepHoopsTN #1) — Bully inside if guarded by smaller players. Good touch around the rim. Constantly scoring in tight. No fear among trees.
