I took in 11 games on a busy slate between the six courts that UCF had running for teams.
Here is a look at the top prospects I saw on the day (Part 1).
Devin Carter (Doral)
There wasn’t a better pure scorer than 2020 6’4″ Doral guard Devin Carter at UCF on Sunday. He took command of his team’s offense all day long. Against a very athletic Sanford Seminole group, Carter saved his best for last with a game-winning bucket in the waning seconds (VIDEO). After falling hard on his back in the second half, he came out of the game briefly, but returned and fought through pain. Carter is a clear-cut Division I prospect with his pure shooting ability and elusive attacks to the rim.
Malachi Hazelton (West Oaks)
Making his debut with West Oaks after transferring over from Class 8A state champion Blanche Ely, 2020 6’5″ forward Malachi Hazelton made it clear he’s the top athlete for his new squad. He caught an alley-oop in the opening game against Lakewood. Hazelton then followed that up with an aggressive 36-minute outing against powerhouse Dillard. He is long, speedy and a pretty solid shooter. Hazelton will be a huge addition to West Oaks and one that brings a lot of energy and highlight reel plays.
Ernest Ross (Santa Fe)
The ballhandling and passing ability for 2021 6’10” Santa Fe forward Ernest Ross are pretty impressive. He’s able to get to the hole with ease with his pure length and good footwork. Ross is still raw in certain areas, but he is aggressive, vocal and willing to put in the time to get better. He doesn’t settle for bad jumpers, instead, he likes to get inside and draw contact. Against Choctaw and Windermere, Ross was the most active player on the floor. His potential is through the roof.
Jalen Haynes (Dillard)
A very smooth and long-legged big from Dillard that impressed me was 2020 6’8″ forward Jalen Haynes. Always active and pushing the ball in transition, he is a fluid attacker and a really good leader for his group. Haynes went after the West Oaks press time and time again and was able to really tire the defense down at times. Look for him to continue to have a good summer with Nightrydas Elite and earn some more Division I offers.
Eric Lee (Superior Collegiate)
Shooting has always been the biggest strength for 2020 6’3″ Superior Collegiate guard Eric Lee. Able to play more freely around a new cast of athletes, Lee was knocking down shots with ease against both Oviedo Master’s and Poinciana on the day. When he’s aggressive, he’s also very hard to slow down with his elusive finishes. Lee should take more open shots for his side as the best jump shooter overall.
Ven Allen-Lubin (Orlando Christian Prep)
Every time I have seen 2022 6’6″ Orlando Christian Prep forward Ven Allen-Lubin, he’s been super good. Whether it was in the Class 3A state tournament or Atlanta Jam and now the UCF camp on Sunday, he showed off his seasoned jumper and his overall IQ for the game. Allen-Lubin helped his squad complete a rally against Westminster Christian. He hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to force overtime, where Orlando Christian Prep won on an AJ Brown layup. Allen-Lubin’s length and smarts give him a leg up on a lot of 2022 prospects.
