Here are the top prospects through my eyes:
Jalen Haynes (2020), Fort Lauderdale Dillard
FAU offered Haynes a scholarship Friday at the camp. Haynes & Co. had an excellent game vs. Miami Killian. Dillard would end up on top, 48-45, behind a double-double from the 6-foot-8 Haynes. The Panthers star finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Mississippi State, USF, Arkansas and VCU among others in the mix. Haynes plays with Nightrydas Elite 17s on the Nike EYBL circuit.
Nick Louis-Jacques (2020), Miami Killian
Louis-Jacques is a scorer and a leader. He put up 29 points — including six 3-pointers — in the loss vs. Dillard.
Louis-Jacques has a nice stroke and an eye for the rim. “Nick is one of the toughest kids in South Florida and he’s going to keep going after it,” said coach Austin Perez. “He’s able to get to his spot and really pull up and hit jumpers and he can get to the rim and finish with both hands.” Palm Beach Atlantic has offered. FGCU is showing interest.
Javian McCollum (2021), Fort Myers
The 6-footer is an excellent point guard with deep range from 3 (shot 40 percent as a sophomore). He has a high IQ and controls the game. Defends … will need to put on some muscle. Interest from FGCU, FAU, North Florida, Liberty, Stetson and Alabama A&M. Plays travel with Team Parsons. The Green Wave handed Wellington its only defeat.
Jagger Ruiz (2020), Wellington
Nice driving ability … very crafty player getting to the basket. Wellington runs the floor well as a team — passes well, spaces and shoots. With Keon Kindred and Christopher Walker out with knee injuries, Ruiz sparked Welly to a 2-1 mark. “He took over the first game,” coach Matt Colin said. “Probably had 25 points, 8 assists.” Wellington handed Dillard its only loss, 52-44.
Micah Octave (2021), Grandview Prep
Octave, who came over to Grandview Prep from Olympic Heights, has nice size and A LOT of skills on both ends.
Averaged 14.9 points and 8.3 rebounds as a sophomore. Coach Joe Dawson will be counting on him to lead team. “He’s definitely a college player,” Dawson said. “Obviously going into his junior year the next two years are big for him. But he has such a great upside. He is capable of being a Division I player there is no question.”
Jared Berry (2022), Lakeland High Prep
Berry is seasoned for his age. The point guard started for head coach Ben Fratrik and gained valuable experience as a freshman. Led Lake Highland Prep past Grandview Prep, 48-38. He teams well with 2020 Victor Brown and 2022 Brice Sensabaugh, who came over from Hagerty.
More names to watch
Alex Vertus (2020), Cardinal Gibbons; Jermaine Hunter (2023), Grandview Prep; Chris Peterson (2020), Vero Beach; Malcolm Dewberry (2021), Avon Park; Gabriel Castillo (2020), Miami Killian.
