Here is a look at the top prospects I saw from the week (Part 1).
Tre Carroll (Charlotte)
A long and smooth attacker, 2021 Charlotte 6’7″ forward Tre Carroll was really good all week long for the tournament champion Fightin’ Tarpons. He is a knockdown mid-range shooter, a fluid athlete and someone who makes it look easy at times as an elusive attacker. Carroll completely dominated the paint offensively in a win over LaBelle. His best moment came in the championship game on Wednesday against Lehigh when he missed a 3-pointer and followed it up with a dunk off his own rebound (VIDEO). Caroll is a low to mid-major Division I prospect who currently has one offer from FGCU on his plate.
Javian McCollum (Fort Myers)
A very talented 3-point shooter, 2021 6’1″ Fort Myers guard Javian McCollum doesn’t need much space to knock down jumpers over defenders. He seems to always get out in transition and use his speed to his advantage as a driver or distributor. McCollum is a vocal leader and one that continues to mature. He has clearly worked on his floater game which gives him another way to score in bunches. McCollum is drawing interest from FAU and FGCU. He needs to add some muscle to his frame, but his scoring prowess, IQ and speed are very hard to ignore.
Lovenson Xavier (Community School)
Community School earned a very nice addition from 2021 6’2″ guard Lovenson Xavier from Golden Gate. The crafty point man was consistent all week long, getting his teammates involved with his quick passes and his overall presences in transition was tough for defenses. Xavier is strong and quick and can shoot well enough. He will be the engine for the Seahawks this fall and his projection ranges from low Division I/Division II/NAIA level as of now.
Peyton Urbancic (First Baptist)
Much like his older brother, 2019 graduate Preston Urbanic, Peyton Urbancic can flat out shoot. The 2020 6’5″ First Baptist is taking over the reins from his brother and so far, so good for the Lions. Urbancic can beat you with his length and overall toughness. He’s able to drive the lane and get to the rack for two-handed dunks with ease. Urbancic is solid as can be and someone who will make a college program look smart. He currently has an offer from Army.
Tyrone Baker (Riverdale)
Although, 2021 6’8″ Riverdale forward Tyrone Baker only played on Tuesday during the tournament, that was enough for the rising junior to make this list. He was part of the standout list from Sunday’s action at FGCU (read here), but he showed me he was much more than a dunker and core rebounder. Against host Evangelical Christian, Baker hit 4-of-5 attempted 3-pointers and was flat out dominating in the post for much of the game. His jumper is not the quickest, but it is well formed and he’s able to create on his own. At 170 lbs., Baker knows he needs to gain muscle and once he does that he’ll be a clear mid-major Division I prospect.
Aaron Jones (Evangelical Christian)
For 2021 6’6″ Evangelical Christian forward Aaron Jones, the work ahead is clear, getting in the paint and scoring points. He already finishes well near the rim, has very nimble feet and likes to drive the baseline. A poised shooter, Jones is at his best when he’s going to the rack because of his size and strength. He was testing his left-handed floater late in the tournament on Wednesday and if he can get that done, that will just add another dimension to his game. Jones is a low-major Division I/Division II prospect for now.
