Mater Academy and Western sit at 4-0, while Coral Gables is 3-0 going into Sunday’s play. Play resumes at 9 a.m. with the semifinals scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and the championship game at 3 p.m.
One-loss teams include Cardinal Gibbons, North Broward Prep, Forest Hill and Miami Beach.
Bigger role for Ostrow
Davie Western will be counting on junior guard Gavin Ostrow (pictured) to pick up more of the scoring load in 2019-2020. Ostrow has been starting since his freshman year.
This weekend he led Western to victories over Miami Dynasty, South Miami, Forest Hill and ATM.
“We like to push the ball,” said Ostrow, who plays travel basketball with the Florida Vipers on the Under Armour Association circuit. “If there’s someone on the fast break we always give it ahead of us.
“Defense, sometimes we trap … speed them up. Our match-up zone is working pretty well this weekend.”
Western 2021 guard Jonathan Bensimon had a big game in an impressive W over Forest Hill.
Mater impressive
Mater Academy, led by highly-touted 2022 big Malik Reneau, has to be the favorite to take the title.
Mater rolled to victories over Cardinal Gibbons, Coral Springs, North Miami and Palmer Trinity. Saturday, Reneau & Co put up 61 points on North Miami and there were still 10 minutes, 11 seconds remaining … with a running clock.
Short-handed
Both North Miami and South Miami were short-handed this weekend. North Miami 6-5 2020 point guard Carlos Hart, and South Miami 2021 point guard Arturo Dean and 6-10 2020 Brandon Sanders, were not here. They were competing with the Miami City Ballers at the Rumble in the Bronx in New York.
“It’s good for these young kids to play,” South Miami coach Robert Doctor said. Doctor said Mercer “really likes” Dean. He said USF and FSU are close to offering Sanders. FGCU and Stetson have already offered.
Gables young & talented
Coral Gables went unbeaten and its starting five is all 2021s and 2022s. It will be interesting to see how Desmond Romer, Ronald Fernandez, Romulo Delgado, Isiah MIddleton and Kuran Bryant continue to mesh and grow. Walter Daniels is another 2021 who sat out Saturday with an ankle injury. Romer — the floor general — is a transfer from Miami Jackson.
Shaw: Wake likes Starks
Miami Beach head coach Jacob Shaw said an ACC program is very high on 6-7 2021 Craig Starks. “He got extreme interest from Wake Forest today,” Shaw said. “I got a phone call from one of the coaches over there. They love him.” Shaw added that FNU offered 2021 6-3 guard Demetrise Patterson.
