Mater, which trailed 32-23 at the intermission, outscored Gables 36-24 in the decisive second half. Here are the top 5 takeaways from Miami Shores:
The finish
2021 Walter Daniels‘ free throws brought Coral Gables to within 58-56 with 24 seconds remaining. Mater 2020 guard Isaiah Josue was then fouled. Josue made 1 of 2 free throws to put Mater back up three, 59-56, with just 15 ticks left. Gables had a shot to tie, but 2021 Desmond Romer‘s contested 3 at the horn was off the mark.
My MVP: Malik Reneau
2022 big Malik Reneau continued to shine in helping Mater Academy to a 7-0 mark at the Barry camp. He knocked in eight field goals on the way to a 20-point performance in the title game. Unofficially, Reneau had at least 7 rebounds and 3 blocks vs Coral Gables. “He’s big,” Gables 2022 Kuran Bryant said of Reneau. “When he throws his hook shot it’s kind of impossible. There’s nothing you can do. It’s either foul him or he makes it.” Reneau has an early offer from Oklahoma State and interest from Miami.
Second-half strategy
The 6-foot-6 Reneau said his squad was a little gassed after having just played the semifinal — a 63-45 victory over Forest Hill.
“We had back-to-back games, so we were pretty tired,” Reneau said. “Coming into the second half we just wanted to come with energy and play hard so we could cut the lead. … It was push the ball on the fast break and then when we are in half-court sets just get the ball to me and let me find my teammates, get open shots and do what I do best.”
Mater 2023 guard Michael Bradley drilled five 3-pointers for 15 points and Josue added 13 points. The other two starters were: Jerick Mejia (2022) and Torence Shelman (2021).
Gables finishes 6-1
The future looks bright for Coral Gables, with a top six of three 2021s and three 2022s. 6-2 2022 Romulo Delgado led the way offensively with 16 points. The lefty does a nice job playing in the middle of the offense. He has a soft shot. Bryant and Daniels both hit double-digits with 10 points. Gables had knocked off Davie Western in its semifinal, 44-36.
Four-way tie
Prior to the semifinals, Barry officials had to play a couple of tiebreakers after four squads finished with 4-1 records. Cardinal Gibbons, Forest Hill, Miami Beach and Western all had 4-1 records. Forest Hill eliminated both Miami Beach (12-9) and Cardinal Gibbons (17-9) to make the final four.
