The Team Parsons CP25 and Boca Raton St. Andrew’s 6-foot-9 power forward, who has only been playing organized basketball for about three years, was named one of the top three performers at the 2019 HoopSeen Atlanta Jam.
College coaches from some of America’s top universities have been flocking to Boca to get more information on the St. Andrew’s 2020 big.
Miami and Princeton were in this week. Oregon assistant Mike Mennenga popped by last week.
Lon Kruger and Oklahoma offered Basa-Ama April 26th and Bob Huggins and West Virginia followed suit April 29. Basa-Ama already held scholarship offers from FAU, FGCU, Loyola Marymount, Oakland, UCF and USF.
“He’s usually the hardest worker on the court,” Team Parsons CP25’s Anthony Ricks said. “[His] motor runs continuously and it doesn’t have to get jump-started. He’s a very, very underrated passer. … Really good shot-blocker, hands and footwork.”
Basa-Ama was one of Palm Beach County’s top prospects in 2018-19 and may well be the top prospect in 2019-2020. PrepHoops ranks Basa-Ama among the top 15 juniors in the Sunshine State.
He led the Scots to a 25-5 season in his junior campaign. St. Andrew’s was ousted one game from making it to state by Tampa Catholic in a one-shot game in the 5A regional finals.
Basa-Ama averaged a double-double (16.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.1 blocks). He has impressive length, runs very well for 6-9 and is a big-time shot-blocker.
Asked during the season what he feels he needs to work on, Basa-Ama said: “[Improving my shot] — that’s the one part of my game, you know, that I am still working on. I don’t want to be a big who just stays in the post. I want to be able to come out to the free-throw line.”
“[His] perimeter game and passing ability improved greatly,” St. Andrew’s coach John O’Connell added. “Developing into high IQ player.”
