Continue ReadingThe Woods Cross Wildcats ended their 2019 season with a blowout loss to the Olympus Titans in the first round of the State playoffs. Going back to the drawing board and adopting a new 5-out offense, the Wildcats have since won two spring tournaments over some notable High School programs.
Spring Season
At the Easter Showdown in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Wildcats overpowered Maple Mountain to win the championship by 13. Woods Cross showed strong improvement in transitional offense and outside scoring, in comparison to their 2018-19 season. Two weeks ago, the Wildcats faced 6 teams in a showcase tournament hosted by the Roy Royals. Woods Cross dominated, with a 6-0 performance to finish at the top. This Wildcats showcased their new offensive scheme and strong defense in beating 5a opponents; Farmington, and Roy, and 6a opponent Northridge. Woods Cross is supported by two players who have the talent to make it to the next level; Tyler Roberts and Jake Howe.
Notable Players
Tyler Roberts will be a senior for the Wildcats and came off a strong jr. year as the go to guy down low. At 6’5″ Roberts shows good athleticism and ability to get to the rim. He’s shown improvements in his outside game which can create real problems for defenses. Jake Howe showed impressive bursts during his Jr. year, especially in his ability to shoot from long range. The 6’4″ shooting guard has added another dimension to his game, by elevating to the rim and scoring in the key during the AAU season. If that continues, Howe will be a great addition to any D2 school.
Woods Cross has a lot of returning talent, and a starting 5 that have played together since the 4th grade. They have shown this spring that they can compete for the title and will make a strong run this 2019-20 season.
