In this weeks column I discussed my opinion on the new Hampden-Sydney head coach, who I think the best transfer is and the current FBI investigation involving college basketball. I remind you all to reach out to me on Twitter or Instagram if you want your question to be answered in my weekly column.
“Did Hampden-Sydney make a good hire?” – @Yancey18
On April 4th Hampden-Sydney made it official with the hiring of Caleb Kimbrough as its new basketball coach. He replaces Dee Vick who had been at the helm for the past 11 years. Kimbrough is very familiar with the prestigious division conference of the ODAC as he played his collegiate ball at Guilford. He then went on to be an assistant at his alma mater before going to Washington & Lee for a year before becoming the head coach of Huntingdon where he comes to Farmville from. Kimbrough is a young guy that will bring a lot of energy to a historical division three program in Hampden-Sydney. Being a player and coach before in the ODAC, Kimbrough knows the type of student athletes that he needs to bring in. After a legendary coach in Dee Vick departed from Sydney, I think the school made a good hire in Kimbrough who you can expect to do great things in Farmville.
“What is the highest rated recruit looking to transfer after this year and where do you think he’ll go?” – @edwards_wes
Over the past few years we have seen the number of student athletes that keep putting their name in the transfer portal grow and grow. This year the portal reached another record high with over 700 names. This has legitimately made up another type of recruiting season for college coaches. In my eyes Jordan Brown is the highest rated transfer that is still available in the transfer portal. The former McDonald’s All American averaged only averaged 3 points per game during his freshman season at Nevada while playing 10 points per game. In the past few days it has been quiet about Brown visiting any schools but it sounds like he is considering a good amount of schools including St. Mary’s, Ohio State, California, Baylor, Kentucky, Wake Forest, Miami, Arizona, Arizona State, Pittsburgh, LSU, Louisiana Lafayette and Oregon per Adam Zagoria. Whoever lands Brown is getting a 6’10 big man with good size who can do a lot down low around the rim and is productive on both ends of the floor.
“How do you forsee the FBI investigation playing out and what schools will receive penalties if any?” – @UVA_HOOS
I wish I knew more about this topic but I do not have a clear answer. A lot happened today in court as former Arizona assistant Emanuel “Book” Richardson came out and said head coach, Sean Miller was paying $10,000 to former Wildcat DeAndre Ayton. Obviously if that comes out to be true, Miller and Arizona will face some serious consequences. Another school that has been in the news a lot for this topic has been Will Wade and LSU. I think there are still a lot of unknown answers involving that program. Other than that, it is tough to tell at the moment as the federal trial is still going on.
