There was quite a bit of talent on hand and here are some of the intriguing wings that we saw in Saturday’s action.
Nate Meithof (2021 McNary/All-Around Players) – Meithof is a 6-foot-3 wing that can really score the ball. A lefty, the sophomore used that to his advantage with the ball as he was able to utilize his quickness and a crafty dribble to create and get to the rim and finish. He also knocked down some open threes when given the opportunity. Meithof has good length which allowed him to disrupt passing lanes and also register some blocked shots on defense. Meithof is a bit hidden as he’s currently focused on playing 16U for a newer team on the scene but he’s most definitely one to watch and we’ll have a prospect spotlight posted on him soon.
Tanner Toolson (2020 Union/WA Supreme) – Toolson is a 6-foot-5 swingman who is an all-around player. Very skilled with the basketball, he started for Washington Supreme and simply made plays whether it was draining the perimeter shot, making the right pass, or taking it strong to the hole and finishing with the dunk. Toolson didn’t necessarily wow us in any one area but it was clear he has a good feel for the game – not surprising considering he’s the son of a former professional basketball player. Toolson noted that he’s currently getting recruiting attention from Portland State and Chaminade.
Grant Dunn (2020 Silverton/Team Fly White) – Dunn is a 6-foot-5 wing who is extremely long and lanky but has good size on the wing. There’s no surprise to Dunn’s game – he does one thing but he does it well and that’s shoot the ball from distance. He has a great touch on his shot with a quick release past the three-point line and he drained catch-and-shoot jumpers all weekend long. Obviously he will need to continue getting stronger but his ability to strike from long range has already caught the attention of some college programs as Clark CC was in attendance to watch him on Saturday.
Kadeem Nelson (2019 De La Salle North/Maeko) – Nelson is a 6-foot-3 combo guard who is playing as an unsigned senior. He’s had a reputation as a shooter throughout his high school career but this spring we’ve seen him doing a lot more with the basketball in his hands. At times he brought the ball up the floor against pressure and was able to create off the dribble for some mid-range pull-ups and drives to the hole. Nelson is looking at the JC level for college and currently Lower Columbia and Northeastern (CO) have shown the most interest.
Mo Kora (2020 Lindbergh/WA Supreme) – Kora is a 6-foot-5 raw athlete. He’s gotten sparse minutes playing on the UAA circuit with Washington Surpeme but the West Coast Spring Showcase gave him the opportunity to play more and he impressed with his above-the-rim game and strength. He’s working on his jump shot and ball-handling to make the transition to being a guard but he’s definitely got some natural tools to work with.
