“A chance to represent your country among the nation’s best is an honor,” McSweeney said.
Calvary freshman Gregg Glenn III will get the chance to do just that. Glenn made the 12-man USA Basketball 16-and-under National Team that will compete at the 2019 FIBA Americas Championships June 3-9 in Belém, Brazil.
A group of 30 national prospects was brought to University School in Davie over the past week to try out. The 6-foot-6, 205-pounder, who has started on the high school level for McSweeney since he was an eighth-grader, is one of eight freshmen and four sophomores to make the squad.
The rest of the roster is comprised of Amari Bailey (Sierra Canyon H.S./Chatsworth, Calif.); Max Christie (Rolling Meadows H.S./Arlington Heights, Ill.); Jalen Duren (Roman Catholic H.S., Pa.)/New Castle, Del.); AJ Griffin (Archbishop Stepinac H.S./Ossining, N.Y.); Dillon Hunter (Westlake H.S./Atlanta, Ga.); Richard Isaacs Jr. (Coronado H.S./Las Vegas, Nev.); Will Jeffress (McDowell H.S./Erie, Pa.); Tamin Lipsey (Ames H.S./Ames, Iowa); Chris Livingston (Buchtel H.S./Akron, Ohio); Jabari Smith Jr.(Sandy Creek H.S./Tyrone, Ga.); and Kijani Wright (Windward H.S./Los Angeles, Calif.).
The versatile Glenn was impressive in camp. He showcased his skills during one particular practice in which he dominated the “Make It, Take It” portion of camp.
In one go at it, Glenn scored with an array of moves over much-taller prospects on six consecutive possessions. He finally was stopped by the 6-10 Duren on Duren’s second-go at him.
“I was thinking of just killing them,” said Glenn, of the intense paint battles. “Showing them I could do all things. It was tough.”
PrepHoops.com ranks Glenn the No. 1 prospect in the state in the Class of 2022. He uses a combination of power and quickness to pile up points. Defensively, he plays hard, takes charges and is an excellent rim-protector.
Glenn averaged 14 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals this past season for McSweeney. He stars for the Nightrydas Elite 15s on the Nike EYBL circuit. Glenn has been offered by Florida, Florida State, Iowa State and Oklahoma State.
Asked what he got out of the national audition, Glenn said: “I’m taking out [of it] how to play with my teammates. How to play hard, no taking plays off. Don’t be selfish.”
“He got a chance to prove he is one of the top players in the country,” McSweeney said.
There will be little time for rest for Glenn in the month of June. Besides playing for USA Basketball, he will be attending the Nike Elite 100 camp June 23-27 in St. Louis, Mo.
