Here were some of the standouts from the sophomore class.
Keon Edwards SF 6’7” 185 Findlay Prep (NV) (Texas Hard Work 17 UAA)
-Edwards handles the ball really well and can pull-up from mid to the 3pt line. He changes speeds like a guard and escape dribbles then makes a play. He has great body control to score in traffic and can already take over a game on 17U. He has great length, good athleticism and skill. Originally from Pasadena, TX.
Nathan Bittle PF 6’10” 180 Crater (OR) (West Coast Elite 17 UAA)
-Bittle is a long face-up 4-man who is a very good 3pt shooter. He has elite length to block shots or rebound the ball. He can handle the ball a little and post up some too. He is obviously skinny and will need to put on weight but his skill, upside, rim protection, fluidity and perimeter shooting make him a priority get on the West Coast.
Bittle has obvious height and length to take over games.DaRon Holmes PF 6’8” 191 Millennium (AZ) (Powerhouse Hoops 16U UAA)
-Holmes is another priority West Coast get. He does so many things well from his defense of blocking shots and covering the 1-5 in space and inside. He has good bounce, not elite, but gets off the ground quickly. His timing, length, agility and lateral quickness allows him to defend in space and block shots. He rebounds at a good rate and has many ways to score on offense. He can handle the ball like a wing and go coast to coast. He can create separation from his defender and pull-up from mid-range. He can make catch 3’s or dribble by his man and finish off tough layups from different angles.
Max Christie CG 6’6” 175 Rolling Meadows (IL) (Illinois Wolves 17 UAA)
-Christie is a long scoring guard who can make plays for others. He has a good looking 3pt shot. He can create his own offense off the dribble and get downhill with his long strides. He makes good reads to teammates and uses his immense length for the passing lanes. He is skinny but wiry strong to score it inside. He is one of the better bigger guards on the UAA circuit from his class.
Jackson Grant PF 6’9” 200 Olympia (WA) (Washington Supreme 17 UAA)
-Grant will be another priority West Coast get. He is a highly skilled face-up 4-man who can shoot it easily from the 3pt line and from mid-range. He can create his own shot and score it multiple ways inside. He has good footwork and can score on hook shots and turn around jumpers near basket. He also can rebound and block shots a good rate and is way tougher than he looks. He is very thin and can get pushed around deep in the paint but that will come with age. He went toe to toe with stronger kids and didn’t back down and plays with an edge.
Isaiah Barnes SG 6’5” 175 Oak Park-River Forest (IL) (Illinois Wolves 17 UAA)
-Barnes is another talented soph guard from IL. He is more of a natural two-guard or wing. He has a smooth and consistent shot off the catch and moves around the court gracefully. He has good size for his position and plays smartly and doesn’t try and do too much. He understands his role for this team and can defend the better players on the wing. Like Christie, he needs to put on weight but his talent is obvious and has a bright future.
