Neither seems to be getting the recruiting attention they are worthy of, which baffles me because of the scarcity of quality posts in the region. Both have put up big numbers in the 3 games I’ve watched the last two weeks; Weir averaged 16 PPG, 12.6 RPG, 3 APG, and 2 BPG while Broome contributed 17.7 PPG and 9 RPG.
Broome and Weir play well together, connecting on high-low passes and finding each other in the paint when one draws a double team. Weir is a terrific rebounder who has really good hands and is basically immovable in the paint. He had impressive quick finishes with either hand in both games I saw last weekend, along with showing some passing ability. Broome has great length, rebounds & runs the floor well, and displayed nice patience in the post. He gets defenders in the air, waits for them to fly by, and converts contact finishes. Both Broome and Weir post aggressively, getting low and putting themselves in good position with their defenders behind them. They capped off the weekend with a championship win over the Atlanta Celtics, with great contributions from both.

2020 Garrett Hien (PSB Elite)- Someone who I’ve been high on since the winter, Hien has really come into his own and is getting attention from lots of programs. Hien showed flashes last summer but his move to 2020 has been very helpful. He was productive once again in Spartanburg, averaging 15.5 PPG and 8 RPG in the two games I saw. Hien plays with impressive physicality and aggression for a player with his frame. He has a tenacious side to him and doesn’t shy away from contact in the paint. There were a few stretches where Hien was dominant on the inside, using a high-low combination with BJ Marable. Hien finishes well and seems to have multiple explosive above-the-rim plays every game. He is also a willing and capable passer who can stretch the defense with his shot. Hien has picked up 6 offers since the beginning of April, with a Wofford offer coming in most recently this past weekend. His coach also informed me the Maryland inquired about him earlier today. He’ll continue to be a hot recruit the next few months.
2021 Ian Schieffelin (SE United)- Schieffelin has been good in numerous games this spring, but I think the best performance I’ve seen from him recently came in his team’s game on Monday against Hype. He was the only consistent contributor for SE United, putting up 16 points and 10 rebounds in a game where the team only scored 44 points. His production on offense was efficient and he showed multiple parts to his game. Schieffelin has a great body for a young forward and already knows how to use it. He bangs inside and rebounds aggressively through contact. Schieffelin plays with a good motor and will rim-run, but he is also effective as a trail big where he can make the defensive pay with a reliable 3-point shot from the top of the key. Looking back, I may have slotted him too low in our recent 2021 rankings. If he continues this type of production in June and July, he should have a spot in the Top 15-20.
2021 Ryan Mutombo (Team Forrest)- Mutombo has consistently taken steps in the right direction over the last year, showing small improvements each time I watch him. This past weekend was my first time seeing him this spring, and he had a really impressive performance in Team Forrest’s win over Upward SE. Mutombo put up 13 points, 18 rebounds, and 8 blocks with two high-level post prospects on the other side. He is an intimidating shot blocker with long arms and good timing, which helps him in the rebounding department too. Mutombo runs fairly well and seems to have improved his stamina over the last few months. He is still getting there on offense but shows some touch out to around 12-15 feet and has a nice base of tools on the block to build from. Similar to Schieffelin, he is one that will likely see a rise in his state ranking after July.
2020 Owen Spencer (Apex Basketball Club)- Coming all the way from Ohio, I saw Spencer and Apex in a tight, intense 8 AM bracket play game against Hype on Monday. I appreciated the way their entire team played, and Spencer had a nice outing himself. He played a solid all-around game, finishing with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Spencer is a thin forward but isn’t soft or weak, showing some toughness inside when rebounding and scoring. He did some good things in the paint on offense and also stepped out for jumpers. His shot-blocking made a big difference in the game. Spencer is pretty athletic and anticipates shots well while extending to swat away shots. After a while, his opponents started to think twice about challenging him at the basket. He could be a quality long-term forward pickup.
