I was able to attend both events this past Saturday, May 26. I spent the afternoon at the LA Classic, and here’s a look at some of the top standouts in the games I was able to watch.
1. Devontes Cobbs – Strive For Greatness 16U
One of the most explosive athletes at the event, he just finished up his freshman year in high school. Originally from the Midwest, he made the trek to Arizona to join Mike Bibby’s Shadow Mountain High School team. He’s a handful in transition, quicker than most defenders and eager to finish hard at the rim. He’s got a nice jumper and plays a decent floor game. He has the ability to switch between both guard positions.
2. TJ Muhammad – Sole Brothers 16U
An incoming junior at Crossroads High School, he’s looking to have a big summer on the AAU circuit. With his high school team, he played the role of the glue guy, the player who does whatever little things are necessary to win. With his AAU team, he’s able to show off a little more of his game. He’s showed the ability of being a lead guard who can get into the paint and score, step out and shoot the jumper, and create opportunities for his teammates.
3. Robert Bush – The Truth OC 13U
This is a player I was able to see back in March at the Prep Hoops Hustle Season Kickoff. He showed some real promise as a big man in the paint. In just a couple months short time, he looked much improved from the first time I saw him. He looked like he worked on his off the dribble game and can put the ball on the floor now. He’s still a handful in the post and uses his size to bully defenders and finish at the rim.
4. David Mack – The Truth OC 13U
Another player that I was able to watch during the Prep Hoops Hustle Season Kickoff event, he too looked as if he’d been working on his game. When I saw him previously, he displayed an ability to get into the paint and score over bigger defenders. What I noticed from him this time around was a developing midrange jumper. His potential as a lethal perimeter scorer is definitely noticeable.
5. Jahzare Jackson – Strive For Greatness 16U
In a day and age when traditional big men are starting to become rare, Jackson stands out as a player who could become just that. He has yet to even play his first game in high school, but he’s got some real promise. Watching him play, it’s clear that he has a long way to go in his development. But the skills and talent are obvious. He’s already got great size for a big man and he is sort of showing he use it to his advantage.
