Here’s a look at some of the top scorers that I witnessed last Saturday night.
1. Will McClendon – Dreamvision Next 17U
One of the top prospects I saw, the Class of 2021 guard is already drawing plenty of Division 1 interest. He’s got a really solid offensive game. He’s very athletic and can get to the basket with ease. Once he’s there, he can finish with contact and he can get himself to the free-throw line. He also has a nice jump shot and he can create his own shot on the perimeter. He’s got a nice little floater too.
2. Austin Cook – BTI Select 2020 17U
Already a fantastic shooter who can knock down shots from anywhere on the floor, he can score in bunches too. He’s garnering interest from plenty of Division 1 schools to this point and he’s poised to have a big performance on the AAU circuit this summer. He’s looking like he can put the ball on the floor and be aggressive in getting into the lane. He can finish at the rim and has a pretty decent off the dribble game.
3. Boubacar Coulibaly – Dreamvision Next 17U
A very intriguing prospect from San Gabriel Academy. He’s still somewhat raw, but the talent and skill is definitely noticeable. At six-foot-nine, he stands above the majority of the kids in his age group. He’s very active around the rim and he makes his presence felt. He puts himself in position for offensive rebounds and tip-ins. He has good hands always ready to catch passes from his teammates and he puts himself in position to score
4. Jhaylon Martinez – Uneek Ballers 17U
I got to see him in action last month in Las Vegas at the Pangos Easter Classic, and he was impressive then. In the games I saw at Orange Lutheran, he was clearly one of the best big men there. He’s a bully in the low post, using his size to overpower smaller defenders for easy buckets. That’s not all he can do, he can also put the ball on the floor and make plays off the dribble. He goes up strong at the rim and looks to finish with authority.
5. Donovan Yap – Uneek Ballers 17U
An explosive perimeter scorer, he tried to will Uneek Ballers to a win over BTI Select, although they ultimately fell short. He has range out to the three-point line and he hit several long range bombs as he kept his team in the game. He got into the lane as well and showed a nice little floater. He put up 33 points albeit in a losing effort.
