There were 94 teams competing in Deerfield and 127 more in Tavares. AAU Nationals will be held in July in Orlando. Here are the top performers from Sunday’s action.
2020 Dom Denny (South Florida Elite)
The 5-foot-10 point guard out of North Broward Prep scored 30 points in the 17U Division I championship game loss to Wellington. Denny sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer with 6.4 seconds left in regulation. Denny is excellent at getting into the teeth of the defense, dishing for an easy two, drawing a foul or hitting a little runner. In SFE’s semifinals victory over Suns Team Harris, he went 5 for 5 from the free-throw line over the final 1:42.
2020 Jack May (Wellington)
The versatile Boca St. Andrew’s guard (No. 11 above) hit for 22 points to lead Wellington past SFE, 73-71, for the 17U crown. The 6-4 lefty has a nice stroke from 3. He can also drive it and has a soft touch. Active on the boards. He is the son of FAU coach Dusty May.
2021 Micah Octave (Landfall Elite)
The 6-3 sophomore guard out of Olympic Heights went for 20 points in a 68-63 victory over the Florida Rams in the Division I 16U championship game. Octave and Co. trailed 13-0 to begin the game. He is getting interest from Florida Atlantic. Landfall Elite (5-0) defeated the Sonics, 60-40, in the semifinals.
2021 Christopher George (PBG Starzz)
The 6-6 George scored 11 points to help the Starzz to a 57-30 victory over Shahbaz Elite in the 16U Division II championship. The Royal Palm Beach High big is very good scoring around the rim. “He’s got a high motor,” coach Truman Montgomery said. “If he’s running the floor, rebounding, on the glass, catch and finishing around the basket, he’s one of the best bigs in the county.”
2020 Chad Napoleon, Wilfred Bureau (Wellington)
The pair combined for 35 points to help power Wellington to the 17U championship. Both Bureau and Napoleon had big first halves (14 points each).
2022 Kevin Pazmino (Warriors Elite)
The Cypress Bay freshman (above) made the winning free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining to beat the Shockers, 69-67, in the 15U Division I championship game. Pazmino had 15 points in the Warriors’ 79-53 semifinal victory over the Stampede.
2021 Josh Minott (Landfall Elite)
The 6-6 Boca St. Andrew’s standout scored 12 points in the championship game victory over the Florida Rams. More coming on Minott, who has an offer from FAU, on Monday.
2022 Malik Reneau (Florida Rams)
The Mater Academy freshman went for 18 points but the Rams lost in the finals to Landfall Elite. Guard Thaddeus Squire — out of Boyd Anderson – also had a big game with 20 points for the Rams.
2021 Ahmad Johnson (PBG Starzz)
The 5-10 guard out of Marianna in the Panhandle was one of the leaders in the Starzz’s run to the title. A lot of skills and high IQ. He scored 12 points in the 57-30 blowout of Shahbaz. Has a soft touch and finishes. Excels on defensive end as well.
2020 Matt Khoury (South Florida Elite)
The 6-3 Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian sharpshooter was at it again Sunday. He poured in 35 points in a game — including eight 3-pointers — to help South Florida Elite reach the 17s finals.
2023 Osmar Garcia Araujo (Shahbaz Elite)
The Miami Riviera Prep eighth-grader shows excellent composure and has good body control. 6-5 athlete has nice turnaround shot. “Plays all 5 positions for us,” coach Anthony Shahbaz said. “Brings up the ball, gets us into our offense. Dominates down low. He is well ahead of his time.” The eighth-grade squad played up two years in the 10th-grade division.
