The highest classification in Utah has a few newcomers that definitely change the dynamic of 6A. This will be our first installment of our assessment of teams moving forward. This is not only based on past success but current success with players playing AAU ball. We have also been able to watch a few spring games. Which has led us to look forward to what might be this up coming season.
10 Teams to be Aware of
Copper Hills
Corner Canyon
Davis
Fremont
Jordan
Layton
Lone Peak
Pleasant Grove
Riverton
Skyridge
We listed the teams above in alphabetical order to teams that have some pieces coming back at the lower level or have returning players that will likely make an impact.
Region 1 will have 3 standout teams that will be tough to beat regardless of their end of the regular season wins and losses count. Layton returns great guard play and some height. Davis has looked great this spring and they bring back a lot varsity experience. Fremont could be a front-runner this year as they return the best back court in the state.
Region 2 is wide open with new coaches taking over and a few rebuilding teams. West Jordan and Taylorsville return a lot of experience but Hunter has some nice pieces but they wait on a new coach. Kearns and Granger will be interesting to watch this year with some new faces on the court. Cyprus could end up running away with this region.
Region 3 gains a couple of talented programs but none more talented than Jordan High School. The 5A runner up will be tough team in the entire classification. Copper Hills returns a few good pieces but will be working with a new coach. Riverton returns some experience on varsity and played well late in the year. Bingham is in a better region to make noise as they are always well coached. Herriman is up in the air as we don’t know what kids are staying or leaving for the new school. West will struggle and Taylorsville’s players will be much improved.
Region 4 is better known as the SEC of basketball will not be as dominant as in the past. Lone Peak can never be overlooked regardless if they have any household names or not. Skyridge is a new comer to the region and they bring back a lot of talent. The 5A champion in Corner Canyon is back but will have to rely on some players that didn’t get a lot of varsity minutes. American Fork will return one player that got significant minutes and has struggled this spring. Westlake has put together some good teams. Pleasant Grove had some good lower level teams that will get their shot now.
