Thompson’s name was initially thrown into the ring of Wisconsin prospects his sophomore year at La Crosse Central where he made — and starred on — the varsity. He would take that second-year leap with a stellar junior season at Central, as they would cruise their way to a State birth under the wing of Thompson and Johnny Davis. He averaged 8.2 points per game, but with the Davis’ manning offensive duties, he was thrust into a defensive niche. He averaged ten rebounds a game last year and two blocks. But, as we’ve come to expect, progress in recruitment thrives in the spring and summer.
Thompson’s repute amongst scouts has burgeoned hand-in-hand with the success of Wisconsin Playground, who has surged through the grassroots circuit flaunting an unblemished record. When talking with the forward, he doted on their recruiting involvement, saying, “our coaches go out of their way to help schools contact us.” That has provided a helpful leg-up on the recruiting ladder, as he’s climbed up to the division one rung as of late.
Thompson informed me that he has garnered offers from Green Bay, De Paul, Missouri State, Grambling State, Illinois Chicago. The interest list has just as much division one vigor, as Murray State, Colorado State, Utah State, Xavier, Butler, and Wichita State have all contacted the center.
Toledo and Bradley have offered in the last week alone, tossing additional division one options into his stockpile.
And when scouts are in attendance, his 6’7, lengthy frame is a huge come-on. He often clogs the lane in a positive sense, as he cuts off drives early rather than late. But Thompson points to his energy as the most appealing piece of his skillset. Whatever it is — it’s working.
All things considered, I asked him whether he believes that deserves more respect rankings-wise. But, in a response that his eventual coach will approve of, he simply brushed it off saying that he doesn’t care where the rankings have him.
He’s only a junior, but his recruitment is going to be an active one.
