Starting with a look at the 2022 class, let’s take inventory of which Sophomores are raising their stock heading into summer ball with their schools and, eventually, July AAU.
Kennedy Hayden, Ballard – “Keno” has been ranked among the best in the class as a younger player but saw his stock dip a little in the last couple of years. It’s starting to look like he’s finding his stride again. Hayden has shown ability to play either guard spot and has good length and athleticism. It remains to be seen how much he’ll play at Ballard as a Sophomore but he’s thriving in his 15u season.
Chavez Woods, Butler – Woods missed most of his freshman season at Butler due to a broken wrist but he has had a big AAU season for Kentucky Ambition. Chavez projects as a wing slasher and plays with a good motor. The 2022 class at Butler can be special if they stay together and Woods is a big piece of that puzzle.
Bryce Riley, Nelson County – Bryce is starting to become a more complete player as the spring progresses. Saddled with the burden of being “the man” on varsity as a freshman, Riley often had to force bad offense. Now he’s able to see single coverage on offense and impact the game more with rebounding and defense.
Luke Imfeld, Boyle County – Luke reminds me so much of former Boyle star Hagen Tyler. While Imfeld doesn’t yet have the mid range game that Hagen had, Luke has a smooth shot and ability to score in bunches and in a hurry. Luke is still growing and has a high ceiling.
Tim Hall, Dunbar – Hall has been a revelation this spring and is in competition for a top 3-5 player in the class when the rankings update next. He rebounds at a high level, finishes around the rim and will dunk any opportunity he has. Tim should start to try and stretch his game out to the perimeter some as he continues developing.
Austin Cole-Carr, Ballard – “Rico” is another Ballard guard that has shown the ability to score the ball at all 3 levels. He’s small but Cole-Carr has a crazy layup package where he can score the ball on taller, longer defenders. The next step to his game is going to be knowing when to kick the ball out from the paint and a renewed focus on the defensive end.
Jack Gohmann, Lexington Catholic – Junior Ben Johnson is going to need help at Catholic and Gohmann could be the guy to provide it for the Knights. Jack has been playing up on 16u and even some 17u with Cky Edge this spring and scoring the ball in big time numbers. Catholic plays a wide open system with a lot of 3s so Gohmann should find plenty of shots next season.
Sawyer Thompson, Wolfe County – Thompson scored a ton as a freshman at Wolfe County and is thriving with Kentucky Future Elite this spring. While he continues to shoot the ball at a high level, the next step in development for Sawyer is to get to the rim more instead of just being a catch and shoot player. If he can do that, Wolfe can be a factor moving forward.
