Grant Asman – 2021 – PF – Pack Attack
We dropped Asman in the rankings after he didn’t appear much for Kimberly during the high school season…oops. Asman was terrific in a Saturday afternoon victory, impacting the game in a variety of ways. In a short stretch, the 6-foot-8 forward threw down a transition dunk, shut down a guard on the perimeter and blocked his shot as he was trying to get to the rim, drove baseline and kicked to a shooter for a 3-pointer, and nailed a triple of his own on the next possession. Asman, who was very physically raw last year, looks to have packed on some weight and athleticism. A kid that played more of a reactionary style of basketball as a freshman, Asman looked a lot more confident in his abilities and looks like he’ll develop into a mismatch problem.
Caden Boser – 2020 – PF – Wisconsin Swing
If mid-major programs need a pick n’ pop big who can stretch the floor, look no further. Boser was draining shots from beyond the arc in a win over Indiana Legends and Saturday’s loss to Indiana Elite. The 6-foot-8 junior moves well for his size and isn’t just a standstill shooter. Boser can move without the ball, setting screens, and flaring out to the perimeter. When Boser gets hot, the Swing like to ride his shooting ability. They have multiple sets to get him loose and they’ll keep running them until he misses.
Josh Govek – 2020 – PG – Phenom University NY2LA
Govek has consistently proven that he’s one of the tougher defensive assignments in the state. The 5-foot-10 point guard has a ton of speed and a deadly crossover that allows him to explode to the rim or pull-up from mid-range. Govek was solid in a Saturday night win over Ray Allen Select to help his team advance. Govek also likes to get after it defensively. He often takes on the challenge of trying to slow down the other team’s best perimeter player. With a low center of gravity and a strong upper body, Govek doesn’t make anything easy.
Andrew Keller – 2022 – F – Wisconsin Playground Club
Keller had a strong defensive performance during Saturday’s loss to Indiana Elite. The Waunakee native protected the rim at a high level and impacted/blocked a number of shots. He defends screens nicely as well. Keller can come out on the perimeter, move his feet, hedge, and force the ball handler away from the rim. The 6-foot-6 freshman is constantly talking as well, offering his teammates support. Offensively, Keller caught and finished well under the rim and did some nice things in the high-low game as a passer.
Isaac Lindsey – 2020 – SG – Wisconsin Swing
We’ve been waiting for Lindsey to have one of these performances against elite competition. On Saturday, he delivered with a 22-point effort in a loss to a very good Indiana Elite team. It wasn’t so much about what Lindsey did on the ball as much as what he did off of it. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard did an excellent job of working the perimeter and the top of the key, creating enough space to catch and shoot and knock down shots with a hand in his face. Lindsey did also have two really nice drives to the rim, taking contact and finish off-balance. It will be interesting to see if this performance is a jumping off point for Lindsey going forward this summer.
Kamari McGee – 2021 – PG – Wisconsin Sharks
I don’t think enough people are talking about McGee in 2021. The Racine St. Catherine’s product can take over a game offensively. He’s very efficient at getting quality looks in isolation settings. McGreen is a strong, explosive guard that mix things up by getting to the rim, hitting pull-up jumpers, or simply just shooting over the top from 3-point range. McGee doesn’t play on a very loaded team and the Sharks also have limited numbers, forcing McGee to carry a large burden. Still, the 6-foot-1 point guard manages to produce and shows great capability of shaking off a few consecutive misses with a short term memory.
Brian Parzych – 2021 – G – Wisconsin Swing
A kid that’s going to go way up in the next rankings, Parzych continues to have a big spring. I’m not sure what he is exactly, but I know the Tosa East standout has a huge impact on every game I’ve seen him play. Parzych carries the offense in a variety of ways as a slasher, facilitator, transition threat, and spot-up shooter. A kid that only knows one speed, Parzych is flying around offensively. When he gets the ball with space to work, it’s right to the basket without much wasted movement. Parzych can finish around the rim at top end speed and isn’t shy about drawing contact. When the next rankings come out in June, he’ll be pushing for a top 35 spot.
Tanner Resch – 2021 – PG – Wisconsin Swing
When Resch gets in a zone…watch out. The Sussex Hamilton native was only on the floor for a couple of minutes before he nailed three consecutive triples in a blowout win over Nova Village Saturday morning. One of the deadliest shooters in the state, Resch has a quick trigger and unlimited range. With defenders having to stay glued to Resch, it opens up so much offensively for his teammates. His bigs can get 1-on-1 opportunities in the post without having to worry about Resch’s man digging too hard. The other guards/wings get more driving opportunities as well, knowing help isn’t coming from Resch’s side.
Donovan Sparks – 2022 – G – Kevon Looney Elite
Sparks is an intriguing prospect. The 6-foot-2 guard has excellent size and length and showcased some terrific floor vision. Sparks pushed the tempo in transition and made on time and on target passes to his teammates for easy buckets. Sparks was very unselfish, but can get coast-to-coast with the basketball. With Nicolet graduating some guards, Sparks could help bolster their backcourt next season as the Knights look to repeat as Division 2 state champions.
Colln Schaefer – 2020 – PG – Wisconsin Swing
If I’m a Division 3 program, even a WIAC power, Schaefer can run my team any day. Since he’s returned from injury, the Sun Prairie guard has been on a tear and looked really good against quality competition on Saturday. Schaefer is more athletic than he looks and always has his foot on the gas pedal, able to score and make decisions at top end speed. He’s a dangerous shooter in the pick n’ roll, able to come off screens and burn defenders who try and go under. His mid-range game has improved drastically as well. In the half court, Schaefer can score in isolation sets by breaking his man down, get him backpedaling, and pulling up off the bounce.
