This is true especially at the 17U level, which was my main focus for the opening night of this loaded tournament. Below is a quick rundown of five players who stood out during my time in the gym.
ANDRE BOTTOMS | 6’1 G | TEAM PUSH/OSCAR SMITH ’20
Andre Bottoms was easily of the better true point guards I saw today. He’s a reliable playmaker with great feel and will pick his man up full court on the other end. Bottoms handled it well and showed good paint-getting ability to go along with some crafty finishes. He also knocked down one spot up three from the corner.
JAYSHAUN FREEMAN | 6’1 G | TEAM BBC/KENT COUNTY ’20
One thing I noticed about JayShaun Freeman is tonight is that he can score in bunches. Freeman does a nice job of mixing it up on offense. He is a threat to knock down the three ball but can also attack the rim in transition and pull up on a dime from mid range where he’s also comfortable hitting shots.
WILLIAM PAIGE | 5’8 G | TEAM TAKEOVER ORANGE/PAUL VI ’20
Will Paige gets the award for best hustle guy of the day. Not only did he fight hard on every possession, but showed impressive burst and strength when attacking the basket. Paige showcased a solid handle, made smart plays while on the ball and minimized his turnovers.
RONALD POLITE | 6’1 G | TEAM TAKEOVER ORANGE/OXON HILL ’20
I’ve always known that Ron Polite was a true PG who can set the table and defend, but tonight he showed that he can slide off the ball and score efficiently. Once he fully grows into his body Polite is going to be a problem. If you’re a mid major in need of a lead guard in 2020, now would be the time to buy stock.
CLINT WRIGHT JR. | 6’2 G | TEAM PUSH/LAKELAND ’20
Clint Wright Jr. was probably the best shot maker I saw tonight. He made shots off the dribble, from the catch, and was knock down in spot up situations. One thing he can probably work on is becoming a better finisher in traffic.
