Demarcus Sanford 6’2″ St. Louis Blazers: The long and athletic point guard from Lift for Life enjoyed a big weekend in helping lead the Blazers to the championship game of the 16U division. He continues to develop into an excellent two-way combo guard who can score, but also facilitate and make his teammates better. His strength has always been his perimeter shooting, but he also attacked the rim and ran the break very effectively. He is also a factor on defense with his size and length.
Recko Bailey 5’9″ Gateway: A tough young guard from Vashon who played a big role in Gateway’s march to the 16U championship. He is really a stalwart on the defensive end where is on-ball pressure is relentless and his ball-hawking is bothersome. He is at his best on offense when he is penetrating in the lane. His perimeter shooting is still a work in progress, but he’s not afraid to take a big 3-pointer in a big situation, in which he hit a few during the weekend.
Trevon Love 6’1″ Gateway: A quick point guard from Jennings who really excels in the transition game. He had several coast to coast forays to the basket where he got buckets at several different angles. He has a nice knack of putting the ball in the basket with reverses, double pumps and over the head flips. It was uncanny.
Barcus Jackson, Jr. 6’1″ St. Louis Blazers: A very smooth combo guard from Lift for Life who plays at a nice controlled pace and can score at all three levels. He handles the ball well and he knocked down several pull up jumpers with the ability to shoot the 3-pointer. He is also an excellent rebounding guard for his size. When he rebounds, he can start the break without an outlet pass and push the ball.
Ryce Piper 6’1″ All Missouri Attack: A nice young point guard from Class 2 power Hartville who played well during the tournament. He has gotten bigger and taller in the year since I watched him last and I like his confidence he displays as a ball handler and passer. He has a nice one-handed pass off the dribble where he can find open men consistently. His 3-point shot is pure and he is always under control.
Mason Bailey 5’11” Missouri Flight: A solid point guard from Mt. Vernon who was very productive in the two games that I watched him play. He played in constant motion with the ball in his hands as he probed the defense looking for gaps to attack the defense. He was also a very effective finisher at the end of those drives. He complimented his drive game with an effective shot from 3-point range.
Kyle Conkright 5’10 Knights Basketball Club: A small-school point guard from Ellington who did an excellent job shooting the basketball throughout the weekend. He made six 3-pointers in a bracket play game against eventual champion Gateway, including a breathtaking four triples of four consecutive possessions. He is a solid ball handler and a tough kid who loves to compete.
