When the top teams compete against each other you get quality competition. Here’s a couple prospects who I thought played good basketball this past weekend.
Shane Bell 6’3 2020 Guard. Red & Black 17s
This prospects stock went up this weekend. He is going to be a key player on one of the top teams in Nor Cal. Salesian College Prep. He embraced his new role as a leader and scorer. His improved handles in the open court allowed him to consistently find teammates for the finish. His ability to score on dribble drives and mid range jumpers was on display most of the weekend. He knocked down at least three 3pt shots per game and his attacks from the wing proved to be too much for one defender. He is an above average defender.
Gavin Wilburn 6’2 2020 Point Guard. Team Lillard 17s.
This rock solid combo guard spent considerable time playing the point position, showing he’s more than capable of directing an offense. His passing and leadership was on display as well as his strong drives to the basket and attacking style from various angles on the court. He’s got a good shooting form, and knocked down some big shot when the game was on the line. He’s a better then average rebounding guard.
Anthony Roy 6’4 2020 Guard. Lakeshow 17’s Elite
Raised his intensity level and helped his team defeat Team Lillard 17’s in the Championship game. An athletic wing who did a good job hitting the boards. His rebounding and leading the break in transition made it tough for defenders to get back on defense at times. He’s a willing passer who often found teammates cutting to the basket for the score. If he gets an open lane to the rim, he will throw it down. He has good shooting form and hit shots from mid range.
Mamoud Fofana 6’4 2020 Guard/wing. West Coast Extreme Elite Purple.
This new comer has raw talent and he showed some of it this past weekend. He definitely needs to spend some time in the weight room. This wiry athletic prospect works best in the open court. He has a smooth approach that allows him to get to the rim avoiding physical hits to his body. On the other hand his vertical was on full display he might have had the most dunks of the tournament. His handles are decent and he showed he could knock down the mid range jumper. His long arms and vertical allowed him to get his hands on a number of loose balls and block shots.
Demarshay Johnson 6’9 2021 Post Area. Red & Black 17s
Very active in the post. Blocked shots, changed shots, goes after rebounds with great energy, and he runs the floor trying to dunk everything. He’s still developing his offensive skills in the post, but plays with lots of energy right now. Possibly on his way to being a top Nor Cal player.
Tre Watson 6’5 2021 Wing. Team Lillard 16s.
He’s a prospect that a coach wants on the floor, plays a solid all around game. He moves with the flow of the game. A solid body who can get to the basket from the baseline or attack from the wing. He rebounds well and made good long outlet passes in transition. He finished well in transition from the wings. Doesn’t make a lot of mistakes.
Robert Valhola 6’6 2021 Forward. SF Soldiers 16s.
If I were to get my hands on a stat sheet, it would probably show this prospect as the leading rebounder for the event. He doesn’t jump high, but he positions his body well and seems to get his strong hands on the ball first. He has good foot work in the post finished with some nice passes from team mates. He’s strong and physical enough to deal with taller players. Capable of doing more.
Lee Hubbard III 6’2 2021 Point Guard. SF Sodiers 16s
Starting to show he can handle the point guard position. A skilled guard whose handles and play making ability helped upset the top Nor Cal team in the 16s division. (TeamLillard 16s) He was very effective at drawing the defender and dumping it off to (Valhola) for the finish. He’s a push, pass guard who finds teammates. He can create his own shot, had some nice finishes on the drive, and can hit the mid range jumper. A good on ball defender.
